I'm confused, I've been giving N "ultra" pasteurized organic milk and thought it would be better. But, my cousin just sent me an e-mail with the info below.
Low temperature pasteurization: milk is processed at the lowest temperature allowed by law (170 degrees) keeping it safe, but not over processed. Many brands of organic of milk are ?ultra? pasteurized at high temperatures. This gives the milk a slightly longer shelf life, but may destroy beneficial enzymes and bacteria. What are you giving LO? Does any of this really matter?
Re: Which is better - ?ultra? pasteurized or "regular" pasteurized milk?
I have mine delivered to me from a local certified organic creamery. The milk is minimally pasteurized, tastes better and in the long run cheaper. I don't pay taxes on the milk and I can go and check out the creamery anytime I want to, to make sure the animals I am getting my milk from are healthy.
This made me laugh. You go check the cows you get your milk from to make sure they are healthy? Not saying it's a bad idea, but you are really giving 110%
I want to go and visit the farm. I think it would be cool to see where our milk comes from and to let Liliana experience that. I want her to get as many of those kind of experiences as possible, as we live in such an urban area.
The milk definitely tastes better. The farm also sends along photos of their cows and their names, which is adorable
Laugh all you want but my kid loves going up to the farm to see all the animals (free and fun for the kiddo) and you would not believe how many sick cows are being left on the milk line for the milk you buy in the grocery store. Ever wonder why they are being treated with so many antibiotics?!
Don't even get me started on the sick cows, pigs and chickens being sent to slaughter. Apparently they are not healthy enough to live but are healthy enough to be on your dinner plate.
We do that as well. The farm we get ours from isn't certified organic, but do not use antibiotics. I also plan on taking DS to the farm this summer to see the cows.
I also normally get DS milk that hasn't been homogenized. It seems to tasted better. You just have to shake up the glass bottle before you pour it.
this. we buy organic from a local farm - it's not ultra pasteurized, but i can also request raw milk as well.
do you think the chicken nugget chickens are healthy?
just wondering, I might try to cut back on them.
I had originally heard that ultra-pasteurization might destroy some of the nutrients, but when I went looking I really couldn't find anything to that effect.
UP is good in that it makes organic milk more readily available. One of my local stores sells their own store brand that isn't ultra-pasteurized and the Horizon they sell in half gallons isn't either, but at Kroger all you can find is UP. I mainly buy that store brand because I feel like it's at least a little more local than the Horizon UP.
