Are newborn CDs worth it?

My DD was a big baby (8 lbs. 14 oz) and fit into BG 3.0s at a month old and I expect my baby on the way to be on the larger side as well.  While they are adorable and I'm tempted to stock up, I'd hate to shell out $$$ for newborn diapers when they'll only fit for a couple months.  Especially when I know I'll have to buy quite a few with the rate newborns go through diapers.

How many did you buy?  How long did you use them before switching to larger diapers?  Thanks!

  • We used them for months, but DD was a shrimp.  You could always do PFs.  That's what we did.  We had 36 and they were cheap & easy.

I like the prefold idea, but I think DH would laugh in my face the day I brought them home.  He won't even use fitteds!  Perhaps I could get a mix, though...
  • I'm saving my NB stash for #2 if that happens, so there's a savings.

Mine was 8lb 1oz and grew quick but even after he could fit in my BGs, he was still wearing his KL0s until maybe 10 weeks. His NB PFs fit inside the pocket diapers I have perfectly, so I'm keeping those around in case I decide on more pockets and want to line dry inserts more often.

I bought my NB diapers new, and I could've saved a lot had I gone used. I had 24 PFs, 12 KL0s, 6 Thirsties Duos, which we just stopped using. That lot cost me $300 new, and I think I would've spent that much in disposables based on how many diapers we went through. I was laundering every day & a half to 2 days.

  • this is what i'm wondering.  this is our last baby.  i started cding ds around 9mo in os, so we've got those already.  I'm just wondering if it's cheaper just to use sposies until baby hits 10 lbs.  i'm not interested in pf, so it would be an aio most likely if we did cd nb.
  • I'm planning on doing a KL0 rental service (sunshine diapers or nell's natural baby), where they send you 24 and you wash them yourself and return them in 3 mos for $75 plus a deposit. Good luck!

  • thanks for the advice, everyone!
  • yes for us because we used GMD prefolds and we still use them to stuff our pocket diapers even though now she's too big to wear them with a snappi.

  • i just priced the sposies we use when we need them (tushies) and then compared 3 months of those to cd.  if i bought new the sposies would be cheaper, but it looks like i can do cd for less then sposies if i get them from diaperswappers, so i think that's going to be the plan.
  • We're doing a combo of KL0's and prefolds for newborn stage.  I plan to save them for the next kiddo, so I consider that to be my savings.  I also plan to be able to use the orange edge prefolds for doublers/burp cloths etc once she's outgrown them so they'll still have function.  And the KL0's hold their value pretty well in the event that I decide I want to sell them.
  • DD came in at 6 lb 12 oz and is still using her NB CDs at 7 weeks.
