a STTn sleep question...

B STTN again last night- which is great, but bad all at once.

When he doesn't sttn all the way he goes 7:30/8-7:30, getting up once to nurse around 5.  This is great. (and I guess it is technically sttn)

However, if he does go nonstop- he is going 7:30/8- 6/6:15 and then is up for the day.  His whole day is thrown off, I can't push back his  morning nap because he is tired from losing that extra 90 minutes of sleep, then it turns into a 3 nap needed kind of day, but he fights the 3rd nap and will end up being crabby and miserable until passing out on my lap at 5:30  or 6 for a short 3rd nap of about 30 mins.

any advice?

thanks!

Re: a STTn sleep question...

  • If the weather is nice put him in the stroller for the 3rd nap. It helps, believe me.

  • Okay, I know you said you can't but I would push back his morning nap if at all possible.  Even by a 1/2 an hour would help.
  • When you say he is up for the day, is he crying to get up?  If not, could you let him play in his a crib for a bit and hope that he may fall back to sleep?

hmm, maybe I will try that next time (this has only happened all of 3 timesLOL).   He was squealing and happy and just kind of yelling cheerfully.  I went in and tried to nurse him and put him back down like I do at 5 and he was quiet when I put him back down for about 3 minutes, then went back to shrieking and babbling.  That is when DH got him b/c he takes the morning with him.

  • I would try to push back the morning nap, even by 15 minutes (does it coincide close enough to a bottle/bfing time?  my girls usually do a morning nap around 9am after a bottle...but if they are up early and are getting sleepy/cranky early - I'll give them their 9am bottle at 8:30am to help them go down...usually works.....or do the stroller or a car ride to get him to pass out for that third power nap...good luck!

    This.

  • I guess now that it is nice out I could push the morning nap back closer to normal time by taking a walk- he does love the outdoors and maybe that would help keep the overtired crabbiness away

    thanks!

  • Why don't you try setting your alarm and dream feeding at 5.

  • I have the same problem with my LO.  I just roll with it and wait for her to get back on schedule (which might be a couple days or more) and I don't put her down for a 3rd nap.  She has been refusing a third nap for the past several months.  I just have to put her down earlier for bed.  :(  Early for bed=6:30pm.  Last night it worked great though.  She was so tired in the evening, I put her down at 6:30 and she STTN, woke up at 6am.  Still way too early for me but at least she STTN!

The walk in the afternoon is a great idea though.  I try to go for daily walks in late afternoon when she starts to get cranky.  She doesn't fall asleep in the stroller but it helps to calm her and she enjoys it.

  • I'd just stop watching the clock and let him nap when he's tired

  • I would defiantely try that late afternoon walk/stroller ride. When my daughter has had an off day she will sometimes crash in the car on the way home from the sitters, or I will take her for a walk, weather permitting and she will fall asleep. The 20-30 min. nap around 4pm seems to help get her to her 7pm bed time.

  • DD sleeps 7-6.  I usually leave her in her crib for about 1/2 an hour if she is happy.  This may encourage him to go back to sleep.  If not, like PP suggested, I would really focus on the first nap and keeping it at the regular time.  He'll readjust to that schedule eventually.

If you really want him to sttn, you should probably drop the 3rd nap and move up bedtime so that he's going to bed closer to 6:30/7.  He'll still probably wake up for the day at 6ish and get closer to 12 hours of sleep.

Actually I agree with this.  If he's falling asleep so early in the evening, then he needs more sleep.  I would put him down around 6/6:30 rather than do a nap - and I don't think it will make him wake any earlier.  DD used to sleep 6-7.  It might help keep the nap schedule the same.
