Open Adoption and cord blood

Hey all, something just occurred to me. I was wondering if any of you that were involved in L&D, were you able to keep the cord to turn into a cord blood bank?? I always wanted to do this if we had a biological child but now I'm wondering if this could still be a possibility.

  • I would think that it was possible but I am not sure of the cost. Our DD was already born so we did not have the option.

  • We looked into it, but it was going to be a big legal pain (at least in our state) -- even though our birthmom signed consent pre-birth, she still had 5 days post-birth to revoke her consent.  The hospital wouldn't do it under our name, even though we were paying for it, and then if she changed her mind, we would just have been out the $.

For us, we just decided there were enough other things to stress about.

Same thing with our second failed adoption -- and it was even greater risk b/c she couldn't even sign consent until 10 days post-birth (she gave us temporary custody when we left the hospital, but the actual consent couldn't come until much later under ICWA).

  • Thanks, I see where it might be a pain.

  • I just lurk....We did this for our son.  It really was not a big deal.  The birth mom signed the paperwork and had to bring the cord blood package to the hospital.  The doctor and the cord blood bank took care of everything else.  In fact, the birth mom told us she really loved the idea that we were saving his cord blood.  Oh' and talk to the cord blood bank.  We got a discount because we were adopting.
  • Great, thanks! I've just always thought that if we could do it, we should.
