Skim or Full Fat breastmilk? Which do you have?

I just found out that breastmilk varies in richness. I may be the last mom to know this...

Mine seems to be pretty rich, lots of cream on top. My 2 month old LO eats about 4 ounces every 3 hours and is gaining weight like crazy!

If you have thinner breastmilk is your LO on the thin side? Have you had to suppliment?

    Awww poor baby!

  • I didn't know this either but mine seems to be thin. DS is on the thin side, but was also premature so not sure if it is tied to the milk or being born early. Although he was quite a big premie.

  • Has to be full fat. DS gained 5 lbs from birth to his 2 month appointment and he's still gaining and growing like crazy.

    This!

  • Full fat.  My milk has a very yellow tinge and when it separates, there is a huge layer of fat.  At his appt today, he weighed 12 lbs 14 oz which is a gain of 5 pounds from birth!

  • I have skim but DD has no weight issues. She does however have to drink 7- 10 oz every 3-4 hours to stay happy! Thank Goodness for my large supply!! lol Stick out tongue

  • Both.  It can vary a lot, and lots of things can affect it.  The weather can even have an effect on the consistency of BM.  If it is warmer out then BM tends to be thinner with more water.  Colder weather tends to have more fat in it.

  • It depends when I pump as well.  If I pump before I feed, I get foremilk which is low fat.  If I pump after, I get more high fat hindmilk.  I can see differences in my different bottles.
  • Mine seems to be on the skim side. DD is a skinny minnie but she is long and is gaining steadily. No problems per se but it does seem like she eats more often and for longer periods than other LOs around here.

  • I have no idea...how would I find out?
  • Must be full fat, DD has gained a ton and is in the 90th%.  She eats like 3.5-4oz every 3 hours.
