We have the bjorn potty chair that DS is currently using, but I'd like to get him a potty seat (that goes on the potty) for upstairs. We had a cheapie Diego potty ring but it hurt his legs and the guard was useless.
We got a whole new toilet seat with a small one built in. It is magnetic to the lid and you can just pull it down when DC needs to use it. We went through a couple little ones you lift on and off and they all got pee in them and then would drip pee all over the bathroom. Gross. The built in one is definitely the way to go.
DS started off with the Bjorn potty chair too and then moved to the Bjorn potty ring that goes on the big potty. He now stands to pee, but still uses the potty ring for poop.
I'm guessing the Elmo ring is the same as the Diego, but my DS has never had a problem with it. I've even bought one for each of the grandparents for their houses. Seems to work fine. It doesn't seem like they need them long, so I don't know that I'd spend a lot. DS is fine w/o a ring; it's just a matter of convenience mostly.
My DS stands up to pee, but sits to poop. He's sat on all types of toliets-oblonged, circles, old, new, dept stores, doesn't matter. We've never used a ring. I just set him on there and he leans fwd a little bit. Also I tell him to push his penis down. Sometimes I'll lift his legs out-up-shut and that pushes his penis down enough too. I hate potty rings, I'm glad we never had to use one.
