I will be flying across the country this summer with LO by myself. He will be 6 months old. I'm not sure if I should buy an extra seat or just hold him in my lap. I feel like it will be a lot to carry and haul around if I bring his car seat for an extra seat. It seems like holding him would be easier. Does anyone have any experience with flying with their kids. Any information/tips would be greatly appreciated!
Re: tips on flying with LO?
We went to Hawaii last month when DS was 4.5 months old. On the way there I held him in my arms and it was okay....my arms got very sore though!! On the way back we were told that the plane was not full so we were allowed to take the car seat on and not pay for an additional seat. This was so much easier! DS slept a lot better in the car seat than in my arms and it was nice to be able to sleep / read / watch a movie etc. So I would take the car seat with the intention of gate checking it then if a seat is available you can use it.
Other tips: if he is fussing walk the aisles with him. DS loved looking at all of the people and everyone was really nice and would interact with him and try to make him smile & giggle so that was good.
If you're ffing bring lots of bottles and extra formula. The security people let me take enough water through for bottles and didn't question anything baby related.
I took a lot of toys but DS wasn't interested in them - he was much more interested in the people around us.
Try to have him suck during take off and landing, it is supposed to help with their ears not popping.
Good luck!!
I found it to be a lot better than I was expecting it to be!
I went the opposite route of PP because DD HATES her carseat. So, we checked the carseat (they'll check it for free) and I took her in the moby wrap. It was super easy to get through security and not have to worry about lugging the stroller around.
She sat on my lap or DH's lap the whole time and they still gave us a row with an extra seat for more room.
Some planes have diaper changing tables in them, along the back wall. Some don't, so we've changed her on the seat before. We scheduled flights during sleepy times. Have fun!
We just got back from flying cross-country with our LO and it was much easier than I expected. Ditto what everyone else has already said. As far as buying an extra seat for your baby, it really depends on your baby. We know that our DS HATES being in his car seat unless he's being driven or strolled around, so we knew he'd do better in our laps and being walked around. We decided to save ourselves the money, but gate-checked our car seat just in case there was an extra seat in between us (there wasn't).
Basically, I just nursed him during take-off and landing, and stuck him in the Bjorn whenever he started getting fussy and walked him around. He loved looking at the other passengers, and people were really nice to us because they could see we were making an effort to keep him as happy as possible.
Just don't do what our neighbor across the aisle did with her baby the entire flight! Her baby screamed and cried constantly, and she just sat on her ass and shushed the whole time, which did nothing. It drove everyone crazy, and kept waking up our DS.
