Adoption

NAR: sad

Hey ladies -- sorry I've been MIA.  I was supposed to be on vacation last week visiting family, but unfortunately, my little vacation was not very vacation-y.

My mom, Payton and I were staying with my grandparents and on Monday morning, after coffee and a late breakfast and lots of playtime with Payton, my Pop (Payton's great-grandfather) left the house to run some errands around town and out at the farm -- we got a call about 20 minutes after he left the house from my uncle asking my Mom to bring my NeeNee to the farm ASAP. My Pop had died.

We thought originally it was a heart attack or something, but it turns out he was had tried to start an old tractor (that everyone hated, but he loved and refused to get rid of) and when it didn't start with the key, he called my uncle (who told him to wait for him to get there) and then jump started it with a screwdriver. It must have started on the very first try, knocked him off the step, and then ran over him. The cause of death determined by the autopsy was blunt force trauma to the chest.  When they got out to the farm and found him, his Australian shepherd was laying on his chest.  And when one of the neighboring farmers was reaching down toward his body for some reason, the dog attacked the back of his leg trying to protect Pop.  She is so lost without him and just wanders around the house.  :(

We ended up staying at my grandparents all week and the funeral was on Thursday. DH flew out to be there even though he was sick and then we all ended up sick all week long and I've been guzzling hydrocodone cough syrup for the past 5 days and still am hacking like I have the plague. We got home around 11 pm last night.

This was so very unexpected and my family thought it would be my NeeNee who died well before Pop. She has never lived alone or taken care of herself -- they got married when she was 18 and she had her first baby right away. They just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on February 27th. I'm so thankful my Mom got to spend his last night/morning with him and that we have pictures of him that morning with Payton, since she is his youngest great-grandchild and will never "know" him.  The funeral was so amazing -- they had the service at the largest church in their little town and the sanctuary was full, the fellowship hall was full, and they were putting overflow in the nursery and standing in the cry rooms (where there are speakers).

Now it's back to reality for us and we're just trying hard to find comfort in remembering the good times, but it's so hard since it was such a tragic accident.  If you can spare a few thoughts for me, I would appreciate it.

  • Mrs.B, I'm so sorry to hear about your loss.  What a tragic situation!  I'm sure you were happy to be able to spend time with your family during this most difficult time, but it would also make sense for you to feel worn out, and as if you now need some downtime to renew yourself.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family, especially your NeeNee.

  • I'm sorry MrsB. Tragic losses are so hard. Take comfort in having pictures and memories with Payton. My grandpa (the only remaining grandparent for either of us) passed away when H was 6 weeks old before he could meet him. It tears me up because it was his only great grandchild. I will be thinking about your family.
  • I am just now seeing this, and I'm so sorry for your loss.  That is so wonderful that you have pictures of your Pop with Payton.  None of my grandparents lived to see us have children, and I wanted that so badly.  It would have made them so happy.  You and your family, especially your NeeNee, are in my thoughts and prayers.
  • That's horrible. I'm so sorry for your loss. Thinking of you and your family.
