we did and it was not decided until the day of fert as well. I remember waking up from the ER and the embryologist was at my bed letting me know how things look and that they decided to ICSI. I was happy that they did.

I am in the process of my first IVF and we used ICSI. We didn't have a choice because of DH's numbers but we had 20 eggs fertilize with it and 4 made it to day 5. We are still waiting to hear if the other two were strong enough to be frozen. But it seems like a great thing---i was really nervous at first but happy with the results. Hope that helps. Good Luck.
After realizing that I wasn't going to have many eggs, we made the decision prior to ER that we would ICSI everything. We got 4 eggs (all mature) with IVF #1 and 7 with IVF #2.
If you have no reason to ICSI, then it makes sense to use the wait and see method!

My RE thinks we will need it because DH's morph and numbers seem to fluctuate.
My dr also said depending on the sample that day they will decide if you need icsi or not... but I'm pretty set on doing split icsi - half icsi and half traditional.

DH had wonky numbers with morph...sometimes OK and sometimes not good, so we were set for ICSI from the start. Plus with my advanced maternal age (I hate that phrase) of 35 and the fact that they went on the antangoist protocal knowing we wouldn't have a ton of eggs, it was a good idea. Of the 8 mature eggs, all 8 fertilized with ICSI. We've transferred 5 between the fresh and the FET and little man is the result. We've still got 2 on ice, so I know it was really the right decision for us. Good luck!
My Re does half icsi for all first ivfs unless there is some other factor involved. We had more fert. w/icsi than natural for ivf 1. He believed dhs swimmers just couldn't get through. We did icsi on all of them for ivf 2 and had a much better fert rate.
We did but we were severe MFI. I would say if you can do it, do it! All of our mature eggs fertilized with it and I don't think we would have had these 2 snowbabies otherwise.
DS (7 years old) from FET in 2010 DD (5 years old) from IUI in 2012 TTC 3rd and final!: IUI #1 in progress!
We did but mainly because our dr does it routinely. I think it's great because it almost guarantees fertilization. Out of our 17 eggs, 15 were fertilized with ICSI.
We have no male factor issues, so didn't use ICSI for my first 2 IVFs. First IVF 7/12 fertilized naturally; 2nd IVF only 10/20 fertilized so we decided to do ICSI for the next one.
7/7 fertilized with ICSI and we got our BFP that cycle. Of course, we switched clinics too, so the lab quality could have had something to do with it as well.

Due to severe MFI, we will be doing ICSI. At first, it bothered me but now I am all for it.
I didn't realize you were doing IVF, I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed for you!
Me: PCOS/Amenorrhea DH: Azoospermia due to Y Chromosome Micro Deletion IVF w/ ICSI on hold until further notice

ICSI is standard for all patients at our IVF center.
We will be using ICSI due to MFI also but on day of, RE will decide how many he will use ICSI with and how many to do fresh.

ETA- We have no MFI issues.

We did, but we have more moderate-severe MFI. It was decided for us at the same time that we went to IVF.
Good luck!
