reflux getting worse

So dd is now 16 months old (actual) and her reflux is getting progressively worse. Even on an adult dose of Prevacid. We finally got into a pediatric gastroenterologist last Wednesday who thinks she could have celiac disease that is manifesting itself in reflux. We are having an upper GI done tomorrow to test for it. Anyone else have a kid with gluten intolerance? Is it as bad as I am thinking it is?

  • One of my twin's reflux got much worse after his first birthday too. It sucks :(

My little dude hasn't had an endoscopy to check for celiac disease, but our pedi did run some bloodwork that indicates he does not have it. I know the blood test isn't 100% accurate, but for now we're holding off on going to a GI doc (we had a terrible experience with one awhile back so I'm loathe to take my little fella back there).

Anyway, I have a friend that was recently diagnosed with celiac disease. It's been a pain in the butt, but not too horrible. And she feels MUCH better now than before she cut gluten out of her diet.

I hope you get some good news tomorrow!

  • I dont' know any kids with celiac, but I have known adults with it and they do really well when they stay away from gluten.  It is probably a pain-in-the-a** since kids aren't aware of ingredients.  I have a friend with a gluten allergy and she says it is in the strangest things: salad dressing, soy sauce, etc.

I hope the upper GI study gives you some answers.  All the best.

  • We had an egd and ph probe done a week ago. Just to prepare you, it's not the easiest thing to do but it's manageable. I just hated being seperated from our baby. Mine had a sore throat a few days later and was very groggy that day. I hope you get answers. We are still waiting on ours.
  • Well girls, it wasnt too bad. She was a terror for about 1/2 an hour until they got the IV out of her hand and she got most of the gas out of her tummy. After that she was fine. We'll see what the rest of the day holds. We wont know what the results are until Thursday. In the meantime I have been trying out the gluten free diet just in case thats what this is. Man, it is not easy! Gluten is in almost everything! Grr.
