Question about freezing breast milk

Right now DS eats about 3 ounces every 2-3 hours. Since he has reflux we are trying to keep his meals small but frequent, but I'm not sure if this will still be the case when we start sending him to daycare in June.

Because of this I am unsure how many ounces should be in each storage bag. Also, is it too early to start trying to pump and store for daycare?

I have basically been pumping just enough to have 2 bottles in the fridge at all times, but now that DS has finally started napping I think I will have more time to pump.

If you have any other advice, I would appreciate it.

TIA,

Meredith

Re: Question about freezing breast milk

  • I always pumped all I could into a bag, just not past the maximum level. Because by the time you start using it, you LO might be eating more at each feeding.

  • Since breastmilk keeps so well, I'd fill up the bags to capacity, but don't overfill them.  Freeze them flat and they'll store better.  When you thaw, stick the bag in a clean container so in the case of leaks, you won't lose milk.

  • Do you then just pour the milk into separate bottles with the amount LO is eating at that time and store them in the fridge? Thawed breast milk can last 24 hours in the fridge, right?

Sorry for the silly questions. This is more complicated than I thought it would be since I don't know how much he will eat.

  • I did 6-7 oz and I froze them flat.  Now that I'm back at work I know the day before that i need it and thaw it by putting them in a glass container (measuring cup) and in the fridge overnight.
  • I froze 8 oz in each bag.  It was past the limit.  I froze flat and never had any problems.  I agree with pp about thawing in a clean container just in case.

  • I froze in all different amounts.  Basically I would just pump into bags and however much I got in each was what I froze.  I labeled all of the bags well and find it really easy to thaw the correct amount for DS because I have different amounts to choose from.

  • I use the playtex drop-ins - I pump directly into the bags and freeze in 4oz sizes so for this age I just pull one out to use it and will grab two of them for when he moves up and takes more.  I just found the drop-ins to be so much easier and convenient than transferring from containers, bags, bottles for pumping, storing and feeding.
