Advice re: my LO's Pedi

Hi ladies.  This is not the first time I have posted re: my LO's weight gain issues.  I took her to the doctor today for her 2 month check up and she only weighed 9.8lbs.  She will be 10weeks tomorrow and was 8.5lbs at birth.  She has had 2 upper GI tests and an u/s.  They can't find anything wrong with her internally.  I brought her to a new doctor to seek a 2nd opinion and he doesn't feel too concerned about her weight and length being under average.  I feel overwhelmed and like I should be doing more for her.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  TIA

Re: Advice re: my LO's Pedi

  • is she growing at a constant, just smaller curve or has she dropped off?

My DS has always been around the 10-15th percentiles. He's been steady, just 'below average'. But someone has to be, if they were all 'average' or 'above average' then average would be higher if you KWIM.

  • Which doctor do you trust more?  I would not worry about it if all the tests came back normal and the 2nd doctor said that it wasn't a concern.

Or you could get a 3rd opinion.  If 2 out of 3 doctors, aren't concerned then don't worry about it.  Or if the 3rd doctor is concerned, he might have a new idea of what to try or what might be wrong.

This. As long as she is growing at a consistent rate, I wouldn't be too concerned.

  • I don't believe her weight gain has been constant by any means.  Her last appt. 3 weeks ago was a weight check appt.  At that appt. she was 9.5 and then today she was only 9.8.  It just doesn't seem like enough gain, only 3 ozs in 3 weeks.  We even have her on the similac sensitve RS because she has bad reflux and we add rice to her bottles per the doctor's orders.  But that does make sense somebody's LO's would be underaverage or there wouldn't be one.
  • If she is peeing and pooping just fine then I guess I wouldn't be too concerned. Try and extra feeding or 2 a day and see if that helps. Trust your instincts!
  • As long as she's healthy, I personally wouldn't let it bother me but that's just the type of person I am. I'm sure you take very good care of your little girl so try not to be so hard on yourself.
  • Thank you ladies for all the advice.   I think we will try an extra feeding or 2.  We are having some issues with her stool.  Starting today we have to start giving her stool softners because she will only go once every few days, so maybe that will help.  The doctor seems to think her reflux is being affected by her problems with her stool as well.
  • Have you seen a GI specialist? Has your pedi checked for pyloric stenosis? It isn't common, but it is worth thinking about since your LO hasn't gained weight, has reflux, and has had a change in stool.

I rather be sure this isn't the problem than just let it go, but that is how DH and I are. We like to cover all of the bases.

I hope everything is okay with your LO!

The ultrasound she mentioned should have checked for that.

Thank you, I went and read about it!  She did have an ultrasound to see if her stomach muscle they describe was enlarged, that test came back negative.  She also had the upper GI test were she had to swallow the barium and that came back negative as well.

  • We are using high calorie formula for preemies to help gain weight, instead of a normal formula. Did either one of your docs mention this? Just another thought...

No, he has not mentioned that!  We have to call him back in a couple of days to let him know how the stool softners are working, I will inquire about it then!  Thanks!
