Parenting Sites for Shelby County area?

I'm relocating to the Shelby county area in the fall.  I'm trying to find information on preschools, activities, etc. It doesn't seem like there are any parenting sites for this area (which is kind of scary).  Does anyone have any recommendations?  I'm interested in living in Cordova, Collerville or Germantown.

 TIA

  • Midsouth moms is a good web-site.  I would look in the Germatown area.

  • Hi! I live in Cordova. I would love to keep in touch and help you out when you move!

I can't give a lot of ideas on preschools to go to... but I can tell you one to Not go to. Lambs & Ivy in Cordova is a place to stay away from. I know from first hand experience... I was a teacher there and I k mow what goes on in the background. The building is great on the outside. They have a security system to get in... but that is the limit of the good things. I would not trust my child (if I had one) to the care of the directors or most of the teachers.

There are some good private schools, but those cost a pretty penny. I nanny for a little girl that goes to Hutchison and that seems to be a great place. They go from pre- k throat gh Senior year... all girl school.

If you hone any questions, I will do my best to help answer them for you.

The really good programs in town are more of a word of mouth thing.  I never found any site online that made me feel confident about the places listed on them.  Memphis Parent is a local magazine that you could check out too, but word of mouth is really the way to go.

I know you've discussed certain areas you're looking at living, but I would suggest taking a look at East Memphis & possibly Midtown before making your final decision.  Both those areas have great neighborhoods with good schools, public AND private, although you have to stick with particular public ones - Richland/White Station district, Campus School, etc.)

Collierville & Germantown are definitely nice areas, but aren't any different from any other suburb that you would find anywhere else in the country.

As far as daycare goes, right now, DS is in two parents' day out programs, Christ Methodist and Grace St. Luke's, 2 days a week at each (I work a 4 day week.)  Hopefully in August he'll start Lindenwood daycare/preschool full-time..he's on the waiting list there.

First Baptist and Mullins Methodist also have great programs.  First Baptist is a full time daycare with flexible prices & schedules, and Mullins is a parents' day out program that offers late care.

I've also heard great things about FLICC downtown, in case your job or whatever has you down that way.

Good luck, and welcome to Memphis!  Feel free to PM me if you have more questions.
