What did you wear while in the hospital?

I am getting my hospital bag ready, and am just unsure what to bring for myself to wear in the hospital.  A lot of online lists and friends suggest nursing bras and nursing nightgowns.  I will be BFing, so these items seem like a good idea, but are they truly needed?  I guess I'm having a hard time understanding why a nursing bra is easier than just pulling up a regular bra.  It seems like the same amount of effort, so any insight would be great if nursing bras really are helpful.  Also, can I just bring t-shirts to wear, or again, are nursing nightgown really helpful?  I am trying not to spend a lot of extra money on these items, unless they are really essential.  What do you think?

  • I wore yoga pants and nursing tank tops. I couldnt stand the hospital gowns.
  • I wore the hospital gown for L&D.  I wore a nursing tank top and hospital gown or robe after delivery.  The robe was easier for me with all the nurses and lactation consultants who were in helping me learn to BF, because it was smaller and less in the way.

Nursing bras don't squish or misshape the boob/milk ducts the way pulling up a regular bra would making it easier for LO to latch on.

  • I wore the hospital gown the entire time until I was discharged.  I didnt wear a bra until my  milk came in.  I would recommend getting a nursing bra at some point though.  It makes it so easy to BF because it snaps down.

This. My mom bought me a cute nursing outfit that came with pants, a nursing tank and a cardigan. It was nice and I was very comfortable. Made me feel like I wasn't in a hospital... kind of.

    This exactly!

  • I wore nursing tank tops from Target, sweatpants, and had a robe for when we had visitors.  I couldn't stand wearing the hospital gown, I felt much better the morning after delivery when I was able to shower and put on "regular" clothes haha

  • I brought my nursing bra but then wore hosp. gowns until 10 mins b4 I left. The nursing bra is nice because BFing canbe hard and frusterating so anything that makes it easier is nice..plus you will be using them later anyway. If you haven't gotten any yet or don't plan to, then I would say to bring along a sports bra for when you are nursing...that might make things easier on you.
  • I brought clothes to wear in the hospital, but I ended up just wearing the hospital gown. There's a chance you might bleed through your pad so you could end up ruining your clothes. Also, the gowns you wear pp are nursing gowns so you don't need to worry about having nursing clothes there. I did bring a Medela sleep nursing bra and I wore that the second day cause my boobs felt really full. I wouldn't rely on a regular bra for nursing. If it has underwire, it can cause clogged ducts. Also I think it would get in the way of being able to see LO to make sure they're latched on right.

I wore the gown the entire time i was there.  I wore a pair of black sweats home, with a nursing tank from target under a long-sleeved t-shirt.  My milk actually came in on my discharge day, so i'm glad i had the nursing tank.  I got a size M and it fit just fine (i'm a 36B regularly).  Your breasts won't "settle" into what they will be for weeks, so i wouldn't go all out and buy anything expensive.  Although i was engorged, i didn't feel uncomfortable wearing the nursing tank - i actually only wear tanks and it is two months out.

This is what I did. I bought 1 Target nursing tank to take to the hospital and I wore it the whole time I was there except the first day, which I was in a gown. I also wore yoga/ sweat pants. I recommend bringing dark colored pants (and underwear) in case you leak through the pads. Even though I had on diaper sized pads the first day or 2, when I would get up out of bed there was a gush of fluid and it went through to my pants a couple times. (not to scare you, it's normal).

I live out of the Target nursing tanks when I am at home and that is all I wore 24/7 until I had to return to work and I got some nursing bras (also from Target, Gilligan O Malley or whatever the brand is..). I have tried using regular bras at work but it's too much of a PITA to pump and I prefer the nursing bras. Oh, for the Tank size, I was 36 B pre-baby and am now 38 C and I got the Large, which fits very comfortably.

I would suggest bringing lots of socks. My feet were so sweaty the whole time I was there and went through at least a couple pairs a day.

This cause I was in the hospital for a few days (C-Section).

Baby number two! Coming soon! June 8th.
  • When walking got easier (stitches, ouch) I wore a nursing bra, a non-nursing tank top, And yoga pants. I hated the hospital gown and find nursing tanks useless.
  • i agree with the clean socks! it was amazing to be able to change my socks! I also wore slippers pretty much the whole time - NICU required us to wear shoes while visiting/feeding my son and my slippers we're okay.
  • I wore the hospital gowns, my nursing bra, comfy socks, a comfy robe (I did get cold), and on the day I left I wore my nursing dress.  Also, if the hospital has someone come in a do photos of baby, bring something to wear for that too.  We didn't end  up ordering any because Liam only would let some pics get taken (once his clothes came off he was done) and the pics were really expensive.

Bring clothes for baby- the hospital t-shirts didn't fit well and little one hated being cold and swaddling wasn't enough for him.

For a nursing bra- really it depends on the bra and it's access.  I bought a few bras at the hospital boutique and they were soooo much better than ones I got in the stores before.

A t-shirt is a little tricky for easy access when little one wants to eat- maybe a shirt that has a v-neck, tank, or some type of top with easy boob access.

I had an unplanned c-section so wearing pants = very uncomfortable.

  • I wore the hospital gown the first night.  The second night I wore a nursing tank and mt lovely mesh underwear because I was hot and sweating up a storm.
  • i brought yoga pants and all but ended up w/ a c/s and the incision spot hurt a lot so i ended up wearing just a gown and nursing bra the entire time.  i knew i overpacked to begin with but i only needed a going home outfit for myself.

  • Thank you, everyone!!  I appreciate all the feedback.  I think I'm going to skip the nursing nightgown, but will invest in a few nursing bras.  I do already have one, and does have underwire (I got it from Target).  Is that bad?

  • I was there for 3 days because of a c/s, otherwise I may have just worn hospital gowns. I did bring and wore a pair of nursing pjs- pants, tank and short robe. It felt GREAT to be able to shower and put on my own clothes. I wore a nursing tank and maternity yoga pants home. I haven't tried wearing a regular bra, but I don't think it would be as convenient as a nursing bra, and I would recommend investing in nursing bras if you are planning to BF. Nursing tanks too! Other nursing wear is not as necessary, but I do plan on getting some summery nursing tops too, because I don't like to pull up my whole shirt around other people. I prefer the easy access and limited exposure that nursing clothes provide.

  • hospital gown, and thank god. I went through 8 of them (4 during labor and 4 after) because of the bleeding.
  • I hated the hospital gown, and changed into some yoga pants and a tank top the next morning. IMO nursing while wearing a regular bra is not easy and I don't see how you can just pull it down or up comfortably. You can get away with just a sports bra if you don't want to buy a nursing bra. But I find nursing bras way easier. A nursing tank top isn't a necessity tho.

  • I brought nursing tanks and yoga pants but wore everything the hospital would give me the entire time. I didn't want to get any fluids on anything of my own and the shoulder of the gown unsnapped, making feeding quick and easy.

i HATE the sleeping ones (with no underwire) i was SUPER engorged while at the hospital and the no support hurt like hell. now, my boobs seem heavy so the under wire helps a lot.

  • I just wore the hospital gown with a nursing bra.

  • I wore a hospital gown the first day and night, and put on my own gown the 2nd day.  That was a bad move-I bled right through it. Embarrassed
  • I had a c/s and was terrified to try pants out so I just rocked the lovely and oh so sexy hospital gown for 3 and a half days! You will want a nursing bra though. I didn't wear mine in the hospital but I did wear it home.
  • Nursing tank top and pajamas I brought from home and a robe.....I totally recommend bringing your own towel and if you are a 2-ply kind of gal bring your own toilet paper....the holder in the restroom @ my hospital on allowed like 1 sheet at a time and the towels were WAY TOO SMALL.

Also...your own blanket. I was in the hospital for 10 days and I longed for my own blanket.

I was the same way you are.... didn't want to buy it unless essential.  I wore t-shirts in the hospital with no problems and didn't wear a gown at all.  I wore sweats/yoga pants and the t-shirts.  I would say buy nursing bras though because they are much easier then regular bras (I've done regular ones at home if my nursing ones are in the wash....) and nursing tanks are nice for an under shirt when nursing at a restaurant or whatever and you don't want your stomach hanging out, but other than that they are annoying to me....

  • I wore the gown the whole time, I was so uncomfortable from labor it was just easy to be in the gown.  No bra, just the underwear they give you.  Plus they check your healing a couple times a day so much easier than wearing pants.
  • I'm not Bf but I'm wearing yoga pants and some plain tee shirts! I can't stand the hospital gowns lol
  • Ditto on bringing your own blanket and pillow.  The towels are small but I just dried off quick after the shower and changed so I didn't really need it to wrap around me.  I wore a gown after delivery until the next morning.  After showering, I wore yoga pants and a long sleeve shirt during my hospital stay, while visitors were there.  I highly recommend bringing dark colored pants if you plan to wear any while there in case you leak from the pads.

I thought the nursing tanks were pretty uncomfortable, I did wear them in the hospital but that was pretty much it, I don't think they're necessary at all. Same with the nursing gowns, unless you plan to wear a turtleneck you'll be fine.

I did bring my own night gowns (never wore a hospital gown, not even for delivery) and it helped me remain relaxed and feel like myself instead of a patient.

This.  I wore one cute nursing tee with a sleep bra under it and it was a PITA.  I haven't worn it since.  I'm about to buy some more tanks- I love that there's so little fabric in the way.  If you wear yoga pants, make sure they're black!

I hated my butt hanging out of the gown so it only stayed on until I got my first shower.

  • I wore the hospital gown until I showered the first time (about 6 hrs after delivery when all my visitors had gone).  After that, I wore a nursing tank and pajama pants.  I just felt more comfortable in my own clothes than the gown.  And yes, the nursing bras/tanks are worth the money.  I can't imagine that pulling up a regular bra would be comfortable for long periods of time (especially with underwire).
