Planting a garden. Suggestions?

When I leave work today at 2:00, I'm going to get stuff to start my gardens. I've never had a garden before. I'm going to have a vegitable garden in the back yard and a flower garden in front of my porch. I need suggestions! What do I plant? What kind of flowers and vegitables are the lowest maintenance? What are your favorite flowers to plant? I know NOTHING and I need help!

  • I have two flower boxes on my front stoop.  I have no shade there, and those flowers get direct sunlight all the time.  After a couple of years of no success (everything kept dying!) I bought red-leaf begonias last year.  They were very low maintenance, looked great, and stayed alive!!!

  • Double knock out roses, daylilies, snapdragons, salvia and canna lilies are all beautiful, low maintenence and will  come back without you having to do anything special.

We've had the best luck with these as well.

As for vegetables, we planted tomatoes, squash, okra, corn, beans, and a watermelon plant. Tomatoes being the easiest to grow. :o)
