Babies: 9 - 12 Months

If prune juice didn't work for your LO...

Did apple juice or pear juice?  This kid hasn't really pooped in about a week.  The pedi suggested oatmeal and fluid.  She didn't care for the oatmeal.  She's 9 months and she's straining occasionally during the day with no results but otherwise she is not in discomfort.  Her stomach does not feel hard.  When do I get worried?  When did you go the suppository route?

  • I went the suppository route after a few days, but it was when she was clearly struggling to go and it was causing her pain.

Prune juice normally works for us.

  • We used the suppository after about a week - it produced almost immediate results.  Nothing else seemed to work.  The nurse also recommeneded trying white grape juice.

  • I mix prune juice into every bottle and that does the trick! 2 tsp per bottle! Our LO must go daily or else he ends up w/ a huge belly ache and will scream his little head off:(
  • We mix it in every bottle, the amount varies... our pedi recommended an ounce per month, so do up to 6 oz a day when LO is straining.

We use apple prune or pear juice.

Sorry, what did you mean here.  I assume this is typo.  An ounce per bottle?

  • I've never tried prune juice, but I did just pop in to say that baby food prunes have ALWAYS worked for my DD.  Earths Best makes them as a Stage 1 food.  I usually mix them with yogurt, but you could do them straight or with cereal.
  • Pureed prunes work for us (remember the "P" foods - pears, peaches, prunes).  Also, try mixing pear juice into the oatmeal, she might like it better that way and it's a double whammy.  My pedi says there really no cause for concern (as in an obstruction) as long as they're eating and passing gas.  It's still got to be uncomfortable, sorry she's stopped up!
  • pear juice and pear baby food seemed to help DD
  • The food should work better than the juice (pureed prunes vs prune juice).
  • Prunes and pears didn't work for LO but BEETS did!  Steam, puree, feed... and wait for an explosion...
