Pumping in the middle of the night?

LO has now slept some stretches longer than 2-3 hours.  I'm eternally thankful, but my boobs are so full that keep havng to wake up to pump.  I get it -- she use to need to eat at that time and might start waking up to eat then again.

How long should I be pumping during these sessions?  Eventually I'd like to be able to sleep and not have to pump.

  • I say skip the pumping and get some sleep, your supply will regulate on its own.

But I'm in pain -- should I pump enough just to relieve it?

  • If you are uncomfortable, just pump enough to make you comfortable and your supply should regulate.
  • I went through the same thing, but I chose to go through the pain and skip the middle of the night pumping, and my boobs have since regulated to where it's not so bad now when I wake up in the morning.  If you pump, it'll only signal to your body to keep producing more.

The first time it happened I dd a full pumping because I thouht LO would wake up  soon and want to eat.  I pumped 7 ounces.  Last night I was in awful pain -- like knives stabbing.  How long did it take to regulate?  I can't sleep through it.

  • I pump in the middle of the night, if dd has gotten up to eat and doesn't relieve me enough, then I'll pump since I'm already up.  Otherwise I just stay in bed, there are times its uncomfortable, especially because dd's eatting at night is all over the place.  I think I started to regulate a bit and wasn't uncomfortable after about 2 nights, it was pretty quick.  I use to be able to only go about 3 hours, now I can go 7 at night before I'm uncomfortable, and she's generally starting to stir at that point to eat.

  • The pain should only last a couple days.  You def can pump a bit to relieve the engourgement but you don't really want your  body producing any more milk at night. It will be a never ending thing if you pump.  If you deal with the pain for a few days, It will go away and then you won't have to worry anymore.
