Liam is sick for the first time, I am terrified

My son is 7.5 months, 5.5 adjusted and he is sick.  So far he has a phlemy sounding cough and some congestion.  I am so scared, I have been trying so hard to shelter him and wash hands, use sanitizer, etc.  I just started taking him out two weeks ago but have only kept him in his stroller with no contact with strangers.  I even wash his hands when we come home.  I don't know how this happened.  When we've taken him out we've stayed away from crowds and have only gone places at off times.  I am scared this will develop into bronchiolitis or pneumonia.  Please tell me your experiences with your babies first sicknesses and if they got over it quickly.

  • it's scary but he will get through it. just keep an eye on it and if it gets much worse go to the doctor. better to be safe ya know? R got sick at 10 months and it was croup.

  • We had our first colds at 4 months actual and they did ok.  They have had colds on and off since then, Nathan even had RSV in January.  You do the best you can.  If he continues to get worse though I'd give a call in the pedi to see what you should watch for or if they have any tricks for you.  Nathan almost always ends up needing a nebulizer when he gets sick now.  I hope your LO is better soon!

  • Don't blame yourself! Germs are everywhere and you can only protect them for so long. DS got sick at 5 mo. (3.5 adjusted) with diarrhea, fever, snot everywhere, etc. It was a mild form of RSV as far as they could tell; he recovered within 4 days. Just make sure to keep him hydrated, watch the temp., etc. If he starts refusing food or gets a fever over 100, I'd make sure he's in the pedi office STAT.

Thanks for the tips.  I called the on call doc and he told me to use a humidifier and the nasal aspirator.  I will be sleeping in DS's room tonight too.
  • E has had 2 colds this winter.  Both were mild.  We kept her nose as clear as possible with the nasal aspirator and kept the humidifier going.  We also had her nap and sleep in her swing when she was particularly snotty.  It took about a week to completly clear up.  We brought her into the pedi just to check on her the first time.  It helped keep our worries in check to know her lungs were doing ok.
