Grandma has finally passed on and her memorial service is tomorrow. I'm in charge of music to play during the visitation before the memorial begins. What are some songs you guys like or would be nice?
My dad chose the music for his memorial in advance. He wanted James Blunt's "Goodbye My Lover" as a goodbye to my mom. He also wanted Alan Jackson's "Small Town Southern Man." For the hymn he chose "Precious Lord, Take My Hand" which might be nice for your grandmother if she was religious at all.
In his memorial DVD, I used Marc Cohen's "True Companion," Alan Jackson's "Remember When," and "Forever and Ever, Amen," and Joshua Radin's "These Photographs."
For the hymn he chose "Precious Lord, Take My Hand" which might be nice for your grandmother if she was religious at all.
We also used this hymn during my dad's service. The one hymn that my dad chose was "On Jordan's Stormy Banks I Stand". I hadn't heard it before, but I really liked it.
For his slideshow, we did Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World", as well as "Blue Skies" (we used Willie Nelson's version, but there are a lot of them) and another Willie song called "If I had my Way". At my great aunt's service, they played "I Can Only Imagine" which I think is also a nice song if she was religious. I've heard it at several services since then.
We used a lot of my dad's favorite songs for his slide show. We actually went through his iPod because he had a list of his 100 favorites. I thought it was nice to have his favorite music playing even though it may not have been what some would deem "appropriate" for a memorial.
I'm so sorry for your loss. I don't have any specific songs to suggest, but for my each of my grandfathers' memorial services, we went with songs they really loved - you know, the hymns they'd always sing for days after they heard it in church, songs that we remembered them playing when we were around, or songs they always got particularly excited about. Remembering and celebrating the music your grandmother loved may be as powerful or more than songs that are about loss of a loved one.
