**Teeah** or other dentists?

I don't know if you are on but I know you are a dentist, so I'm wondering how you feel about the invisaline invisible braces? My dentist does them (he isn't an ortho) but I don't need much as I have had braces before but was a poor retainer wearer Embarrassed and now they won't fit. I have no bite issues but am wondering if you recommend invisalines or if they are a waste of money. Someone I know who is a ortho assistant said they think they are a waste of money and most people end up in metal braces anyway. What do you think?

Re: **Teeah** or other dentists?

  • I don't have a ton of experience with them, but I do have a couple patient that have used them with success.  Then again I had a friend in dental school that used them, ended up getting metal braces, and then ended up getting those off because she wasn't making any progress (just trying to move one tooth basically).  I do think they work best in cases like yours though, when it's just minor movement.  I'm actually considering braces too, I've never had them but I've been getting a little crowding with my lower teeth, I know I need metal down there but I'm hoping I can get Invisalign on the top.

My only suggestion would be to see an orthodontist too.  Not that you can't have your general dentist do the Invisalign (it's pretty much a no-brainer from what I've heard, it doesn't take much on the part of the dentist), but just to make sure that there's nothing the orthodontist thinks would need metal braces to correct.  If the ortho thinks you're a good candidate for the Invisalign and it's cheaper through your regular dentist then I'd let him do it.

  • Thanks and you have beautiful teeth! I have spoken to an ortho and he wants to put me in metal braces again for 9 months at a cost of $5,200. Just seems like a lot to me.

I'll let you know what I decide but I'm leaning toward the invisalines!

  • I wabt braces too! I have a gasp in my front two teeth. I would like the invisilign but if I have to do metal then I will try to get them on the back side of my teeth so I'm sporting a bunch of metal. Lol! I have always been so self consious of my teeth and makes me feel all white trash! (Not saying anyone with f-d up teeth is WT. I just feel that way)
  • I'm thinking about that too, getting them on the backsides of my teeth.  My teeth look fine but the way that they're crowding I'm concerned that it's only going to get worse.  DH had braces a couple years ago and now his teeth are perfectly straight, I guess I'm kind of jealous!

  • i know this is kinda off the subject BUT i wanted to share... i had braces for about 4 years. my ortho moved my teeth too fast which caused my gums to degenerate. i didnt realize the damage until now (6 years later). my gums have begun to "disappear" and i am starting to see the roots of my bottom teeth. I hate my ortho and i wish i could sue her now!! (i was in high school when i got them off.) oh and i wore my retainer for 5 years... lost them... now my teeth have gaps. grrrr. i want braces again but why... by the time im 30 im not gonnahave freakin real teeth. anyway thought id share

Honestly I doubt you could sue her even if you were still within the statute of limitations.  Like any medical procedure, there can be unwanted side effects to braces.  And I'm guessing if you were in them for four years, you had a pretty complicated bite to begin with.  Has your dentist said that it was the braces that's causing the gum recession?  I'm just wondering because recession can be caused by a number of things.  If it's bad enough, there are gum grafting procedures that can be done, all is not lost!

Oh and one possible side effect of braces is root resorption.  I worked for an orthodontist once when I was in dental school, he had one case in over 20 years where the roots of the patients teeth completely resorbed and ALL his teeth had to be removed!  Crazy huh?
