Parenting after a Loss

When did you try a paci with your new baby?

We are wanting to try a paci around 2.5 or 3 weeks or so...Is this a good time to try one before it's "too late" for her to take one?  We are trying the bottle on Friday when she'll be two weeks and 3 days...Might try the paci the Tuesday after that, when she'll be 3 weeks. Do both of those seem like okay times?  Don't want her to have the whole nipple confusion thing going on as she is a good latcher right now but I do think that she would enjoy a paci as she likes to suck... a lot!  When did you try a paci with your new baby????

 Thanks girls!

  • We did a paci and supplemented with a bottle right away and Cole is the BOOB man and never had nipple confusion and will gladly take me over a nipple anyday even though he loves his bink and his bottle :) I say try it whenever!!

  • In the hospital for both kiddos. Then started the bottle and around 6 days for DD (latching issues so I ad to pump) and 1.5 wks for DS. I would maybe try them sooner rather than later. Don't overthink the "nipple confusion" thing. It's a valid concern, but in the end some kids are just more into the bottle/boob/whatever than others and it doesn't necessarily have to do with the timing when things were introduced.GL!

  • The 2nd day in the hospital. We've had no issues. FWIW the pedi and LC said they don't believe nipple confusion occurs 99% of the time unless you have a premie or other uncommon issues.

  • I waited until 4 weeks and my son was a 24/7 comfort nurser. He now can go from boob, to paci to bottle with ease. It is tough, but I'm glad we waited.
  • We did it at 3.5 weeks. I didn't want to cause nipple confusion, but I wanted to make sure he took the paci rather than his thumb. He took the paci when necessary and gave it up around 6 months, so I was really happy that he didn't get hooked on it. He never sucked his thumb/fingers.

  • Also, while we waited for the 3-4 week mark to arrive, we would use a clean finger to soothe him when he got upset enough to need something (usually it happened during diaper changes when it wasn't possible to nurse at that moment).

  • They Pacied her the first night in the NICU, so she had that before boob or bottle. I don't know if that's part of the reason she never had a good latch or not, but I will say, that after we gave her a NUK brand paci, her latch improved. So, I'd recommend NUK brand. Our pedi had us switch to that from the hospital soothie type paci.

  • We tried the bottle at around 5 weeks and the pacifier at 1 month.  We are still BFing, and she never had any confusion but we started later.

I only made it to day 6! I had severe nipple damage from a wrong size shield and he was comfort sucking all night. Luckily it did not affect my supply or cause nipple confusion. He loves that paci.
  • I don't think a paci creates nipple confusion like a bottle does.  They don't get any milk from a paci, it just fufills that need to suck.  They gave DD a paci when she got her PKU test.  We tried that one the first week and she didn't really care for it.  She was using me for comfort sucking, so we thought we'd try another type of paci (MAM) and she liked it.  That was around 2 weeks.  Never had nipple confusion, when it came time to eat she was ready.  I would have tried earlier, we just didn't get around to picking up some new ones until then.
  • We used a paci the 2nd night in the hospital. DD liked sucking on my finger so I just gave her a paci instead. She had no nipple confusion and learned to BF just fine.

We started giving a bottle at 2 weeks old. We used Breastflow and she went from breast to bottle with no problems at all.

  • We were worried about this and didn't give her one in the hospital despite the fact that she was super fussy.  At her pedi appt at about 5 days after birth the doc said to give it to her and that she won't have any confusion.  He was right in our case!

  • Despite my wishes, the hospital gave DS a paci the night he was born in the NICU.  He most definitely had nipple confusion for the first 2 weeks but that had to do with getting a bottle, paci, using a nipple shield.  He had tongue tie so we had a harder time in the beginning.  I know a lot of people don't believe in nipple confusion, but we definitely experienced it.  It sounds like you have BFing established well enough now that it wouldn't be an issue to introduce it.  If she starts having trouble latching, then just ditch the paci for a while, no biggie.

Same with us. We waited between 3-4 weeks for both a bottle and a paci. Actually, paci may have been slightly earlier, but we held off and I used my pinky finger  as slong as I could. Still, Eliana doesn't love a paci. And, she happens to be on a bottle strike right now. Not loving either one so much. She loves her mom!! :) LOL
