We were told to have (sugar free) candy available for ourselves while we were in labor as our mouths will get very dry, very quickly. But, we were told no recommendations!
My hospital would allow "clear liquids" which includes juice, etc. So it might not have to be sugar-free candies unless you are worried about your teeth. Jolly ranchers or something like that.
It's just another reason to labor at home as long as possible so you can keep yourself nourished!

Oh I def. plan to! I told my DH this many times. Once we get to the hospital we can only have the sugar free candy and clear liquids like ice chips and popsicles.
I brought my own water bottle filled with watered down cranberry juice and I snuck drinks in b/c i was dying of thirst.
Usually if you have an epidural they don't want you to have anything by mouth.
I plan on going natural and if we do end up getting an epi we can still have candy to keep our mouth from drying out. I know every hospital is different, so thankfully mine allows this.
I was wondering this too because on our packing list from our birthing center, it says "hard candies" -- I'll probably get some jolly ranchers or something.
They also said they provide, water, juice, broth, and jello! I was surprised!
I'd recommend sugar free Lifesavers in one fruity variety and one minty variety. That is what I did when I had DD. The fruity ones were good and sweet but when the sweet got to be too much, or when my mouth felt dry and funky, the mint ones were awesome. I already have these packed in my hospital bag!
There's something called "AquaDrops" which help increase salivation and they're sugar free. I recommend them to my patients who have dry mouth and they work pretty well.
Be careful not to eat TOO much sugar free candy, because they tend to have a laxative effect... which may not be too bad after childbirth, now that I think about it...

They recommend sugar free because they don't make you thirsty like sugary candy does. It has nothing to do with your teeth.
I was lucky. My hospital gave me tons of water and even brought me meals.
That's a good idea. lol. I think I may want to stick to those...
Yup. I highly doubt I'll care about my teeth :-p
I didn't even know they made sugar free jolly ranchers. Those may be good in the early stages...or in general now. lol. I've been loving sweet lately!
