Breastfeeding

Please help! BF with 1 mo old

I have been successfully BF my baby for a month now.  The last few days she had been really agitated about 10 minutes into her feeding.  She flails her arms and legs and detaches a bunch of times.  I think maybe she is full but when I put her back on the breast she takes it but about 10 seconds later she pulls off again.  I have checked to make sure I still have milk and I do.

Also, she never seems happy after she eats.  She always starts screaming.  She has been screaming now for 45 minutes.

 Help!

  • My LO sometimes gets like this if she has trapped gas.  Other than that, I don't have any suggestions!

  • You probably already tried this, but have you burped her really well? Whenever my LO does this she will let out a couple big burps and calm down. GL!
  • My thoughts are this could be: gas, reflux, or (I hope not) colic.

Try burping in all 3 positions (sitting up, over your shoulder, across your lap). Keep her upright after her feedings for at least 20 min. to help keep everything down and allow any additional burps to come up. GL!

  • My daughter did this too. I would definitely try diligent burping. I found that laying her on my lap and "cycling" her little legs seemed to help her feel better. Also gently rubbing her tummy in the shape of a backwards c (clockwise) seemed to really help.

Eventually, I stopped eating dairy products completely and that helped her a little bit also.

  • Do you have a forceful let down?  I do and it started about 4 weeks after LO was born.  She'd act exactly as you describe.  Apparently my milk comes down too fast for her and she was pulling off to deal with it.  I also have over supply issues that caused a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance which led to lots of gas and fussiness after she ate and then she'd be hungry again within an hour or so of feeding.

  • She may need to be burped.  She may have reflux.  She may just be fussy and there may not be much you can do except be patient and maybe wait for 30 minutes or so when she starts fussing before trying to nurse again.  Just a few thoughts.
