you guys are the best preemie resource I know of so, here goes:
has anyone had a problem with bloody stools? we've been having for several days (and we've had before too). My guy shows no signs of infection ( no fever, no elevated wbc count, and he's happy). we are on elecare so allergies don't seem to be a possibility-although they've agreed to scope him-though not for several weeks. has anyone dealt with anything like this?
thanks,
m
Re: bloody stools question
the only 2 things i can thing of are:
1) some kind of allergy
2)fissure from straining hard when pooping. this has happened to DS a couple times when he is constipated. but it wasn't much blood and he screamed/cried from the pain.
hope he is doing better.
We have had ongoing issues with blood in stool. It started in NICU. After worrying it was related to NEC they decided it was a protein allergy and moved our little guy off BM and on to Elecare. We still had issues. We got sent home with Elecare, BM once a day and a referral to a Ped. G.I. We got into our G.I dotcor just a few weeks ago. Right at the time Andrew decided he no longer wanted the formula and would not tolerate it.
Since Andrew had tons of x-rays in NICU and no problem was found our G.I ordered a lot of lab work and gave us a tentitive diagnosis of breastmilk colits. But since Andrew is no longer tolerating the Elecare out G.I doctor said we can feed BM through the bloody stools and just ignore what's in his diaper providing that he seems happy, is growing properly, meeting his milestones and his lab works stays looking good. Right now we are waiting for the labs to come back. Out G.I said he could scope Andrew but right didn't see a strong indication to do it now so I opted to wait until it was necessary
Have you been seen by a G.I doctor? If not I would ask for a referal. It has given me a lot of peace of mind.
