We will be taking a trip to FL (from MN) for a wedding over Labor Day weekend. L will be a little over a year & we are debating on whether to purchase a seat for L. Technically she can sit on my lap; and it would be about $350 cheaper if we didn't purchase another seat.
We CAN afford to purchase the seat (we will just have to cut back on other things on the trip), but I'm just asking opinions as to whether it is completely necessary. Have any of your flown with your LOs? If so, how did it go & do you have any pointers?
Also, just wondering how the whole carseat thing works...do I bring my own car seat & just buckle it into the plane seat?
TIA for your help!
Re: On a plane with a 12mth old-purchase another seat?
My kids have flown often. I never buy them a separate seat. However now that DS1 is over 24 months we have to purchase his seat. The arilines will let you bring your carseat on the plane but is has to be an FAA approved seat. Not all seats are approved. My britax is approved so I will be using that for our next trip in a week. I think you just strap it in using the seatbelt. I have heard though that LO will feel like they are in the car if they are in their carseat and it may make the trip easier. But we just held them between DH and I. The airlines will give you seat for LO for free if the plane is not booked. That has happened to us many times. IMO I would keep the money and hope for an open seat between you and your DH. GL!!
I have not bought a seat yet for my DS the couple of times that we have flown with him, but we decided that the next time we fly with him in December (he will be 20 months) we will be buying him one for the extra room as he is getting much bigger!
If you don't book one and are hoping for a empty seat, select the isle and window for you and your DH. This will give you the best chance at having a extra seat in your isle as people will last choose the middle seat. Also if you take your car seat and don't have a seat you will just have to check it. Most airlines do not charge for it.
I wouldn't buy the seat. We've flown with DS four times and never bought a seat and most of the time there's been an extra one anyway. I'm taking DS to Australia in Dec (he'll be 16 months) and even though it's a really long flight, it's not worth the money IMO to buy him his own seat.
Also, if your flying with your DH/SO, you can just swap LO between you even if there isn't an extra seat, and it's not a very long flight anyway - you should be fine.

We have taken 2 plane trips with C - once at 6 mo and once at 9mo. Neither time we bought a seat for him. My feeling was that no way would he have sat still in his seat. He slept and sat in our laps the entire trip and it was fine except the most recent trip he was extremely wiggly. An extra seat would have helped if it were empty, with a car seat I'm not so sure.
One thing that was an amazing help with the second trip was that on the return flight, we had the first row after 1st class. The extra room was awesome and kept C from banging into the seats in front of us.
Also, a warning about flying Delta if by chance you were considering it. On both of our most recent flights the gate agents were absolutely horrible to us, tried to bump us (both times) even though we had confirmed seats (which miraculsously disappeared the day of the flight), were insanely rude to us, etc. We will NEVER fly Delta again, especially with a child.
