Adoption

Any NY/NJ ladies out there adopting from China?

Hi!  After 2 1/2 years of heartbreak, we have decided to stop trying to get pregnant.  I am very much at peace with this decision and am looking forward to being a mother to an adopted child.  My husband and I have discussed it and we would like a baby from China.

I'm new to all of this, so can you please help me?  Do you have an agency suggestion?  What is the cost to adopt from China?

Re: Any NY/NJ ladies out there adopting from China?

  • Hi, and welcome to the group!  I'm in NJ, but am adopting from Peru, not China.

Generally, in international adoption, it's not necessary that your agency be in your state; only the homestudy agency needs to be licensed there.  Also, I just thought I'd let you know, in case you don't already, that China adoptions are currently taking 3-4 years, except for special needs children.

I usually suggest that people considering adoption should check out an introductory book on the subject, because there are so many different kinds of adoption, each with its own process.  I think books like "Adoption for Dummies" or "The Complete Idiot's Guide To Adoption" (which I used) are a great place to get started.  They provide lots of basic information on adoption, the different types, the processes, and how to research an agency.  Another good book is "The Complete Adoption Book."  Any of these will help you decide which type of adoption best ?fits? your family.

If you then still believe that international adoption is the right path for your family, you?ll need to pick from which country. The US Department of State's website lists the requirements to adopt from each country (https://adoption.state.gov/).  (Here's China's page:  https://adoption.state.gov/country/china.html.)

Once you've made your country choice, you'll need to find an agency that has a program specializing in adoptions from that country.  I highly recommend researching any agency you are considering to make sure it abides by ethical standards.  The yahoo group "Adoption Agency Research" is a phenomenal resource for vetting agencies.  The group is dedicated to giving honest feedback on agencies.  You can ask about the agencies you are interested in directly, and also search their archives and files.

    Good luck!

  • DH and I had our hearts set on adopting from China for a long time.  Unfortunately, over the last 4 yrs (since we initially met with an agency), the timeline for adopting from China has grown to over 3 years.  That long of a wait is just too long for us, so we have reluctantly decided against it now.

  • Thank you ladies......we might have to reconsider China if it's going to take that long.  I'll start with the books and then look for an agency.
  • hi!

i live in NJ and we're getting ready to start the china adoption process. we're going to use Holt. They are a national agency, so they work all over the country. but they have an office in trenton.

its true that the "standard" china adoption proces for a non special needs child is taking up to 4 years now.

BUT Holt has a "Child of Promise" program, for families interested in kids with "minor or correctable" special needs. non life threatening stuff like hearing loss, vision impairment, cleft lip/cleft palate....and that process is taking about 14-18 months right now. Basically when you apply you fill out a "checklist" of special needs you're open to. once you're done your home study stuff you go on a waiting list. every month or so, china release a list of kids to the agencies... and then the agency matches you with a child that fits the needs you're open to. you get the medical info and have i think 48 hours to look it over, talk to a doctor and decide if that child is a good "fit" for you.

its all up to what you're open to. they have the special needs list on their website so you can start doing some reasearch on the different needs and see if you would be comfrotable with any of them. I'm a speech therapist and work with kids with special needs- so we're open to kid with cleft lip/cleft palate.

the cost is going to be probably about $25K including two of us traveling over there for 2 weeks..... but theres a 13 K tax credit which really helps!

definitely check it out... and let me know if you have any quesitons... even though we haven't officially started yet, i've kind of researched the whole thing to death LOL good luck!!!

This is us too. We had to wait for me to turn 30, and in the meantime, the program ground to a near halt. The people who just got referrals waited 4 years for their babies from log in to referral. Sad Please go to chinaadopttalk.com, read the blog posts and read the forum posts before you make a decision on China. The ONLY people I'd advise to choose China right now are those who want to adopt a special needs child, as the wait is much shorter for that.

  • I am from NJ.  My friend and coworker adopted from China about 2 years ago.  She has some great information.  I can ask her for you if you'd like.  She used an agency that no longer exists, but she said it was not for reasons having to do with ethics, they were just small and couldn't compete with larger agencies.  When she spoke with me about adoption, although I wasn't considering IA, she said that many of her friends that she has met from networking have used Holt International and were happy.

  • I'm from NY/NJ...we are in the process of adopting from Ethiopia :) good luck on your decisions!
  • Thank you, Thank you, Thank you ladies!  DH and I need to start saving  $$$ and researching.  But I will let you know if I have any questions along the way.
