I was planning to rent while on mat leave and get a smaller, more portable (freestyle) pump for work. The PISA was too bulky last time, and the bag fell apart after 4 months. But the rental rates are outrageous! I've heard that while the PISA (which I still have) is fine for helping establish supply, some people have had better results with hospital grade, but if I'm going to shell out just as much as I would for buying the portable pump ($95/mnth???) I'd need to justify that some way. I had some supply issues last time, so if a hospital grade pump would be better, then I'd be willing to try it. I remember reading the last time around that a lot of people who had used the PISA and the hospital grade Medelas said they were basically the same thing. Any other insights? TIA

While they ARE basically the same I found that the hospital grade pump did have slightly better suction. I never turned the hospital grade pump all the way up but I do my PISA. I used the Symphony for the first 6 months (my company pays for the rental for 6 months) and since I wanted to continue to nurse longer I just purchased the PISA since I would have paid more to continue to rent than to just buy.
If I had to pay for rental myself next time I would probably just use my PISA but if I'm still w/current company and they pay for it - I will use the Symphony again.
