1st Trimester

First appointment at 6 weeks or 8 weeks?

When I got a positive pregnancy test, I called my OB's office right away to make an appointment.  They said they typically schedule first appointments for 8 weeks, so I went ahead and scheduled it.

My Dr. called me later in the day to see how I was feeling and to talk about some meds I'm on and she said she'd be happy to have me in for my first appointment and an ultrasound at 6 weeks if I wanted to see the heartbeat.  She said it was up to me to reschedule the appointment if I wanted to.

Of course I'd like to get in sooner and see the heartbeat sooner, but I'm afraid of getting my hopes up too early.  This is my first pregnancy and I'm terrified of miscarriage/ectopic/etc.  DH says to wait until 8 weeks, but I'm so anxious!

What would you ladies do/suggest?

  • 6 weeks may or may not be too early to see or hear the heartbeat. It depends on your baby. If it were me, I'd go at 6 weeks!!

With DS I had gotten to go to the dr at 6 weeks, but we didn't get an u/s until 11. With this pregnancy, it's a different OBGYN and they're not having me come in until 8 weeks, but I do get an u/s that day (well, at least, I hope I do, that's what the receptionist said!!)

  • If it were me, I would go in at 7 weeks. lol. I know at 7 weeks there will definitely be a heartbeat, and that most things are visible. Here is a link that shows you what the ultrasounds look like/what you can see at the various weeks. https://pregnancy.about.com/od/fetus/a/uswbw.htm

Once you see that heartbeat, your chances of miscarriage go down dramatically.

But really, do whatever makes you the most comfortable. If you want that ultrasound earlier for peace of mind, then do it. If you want to wait, because you are afraid that you won't see something because it is too early, then wait. In either case, it sounds like you have a great doctor!

Thanks for the link!  Very cool.

My other argument for DH about going in at 6 weeks is that we'd have an ultrasound picture to break the news to the family on Mother's Day.  But, I'm liking the odds for 7 weeks....hmm...

  • I've always heard that you may or may not be able to hear the heartbeat at 6 weeks.  It's kinda an iffy time.  That may make you anxious if they aren't able to find one at 6 weeks.  I'd wait til 8 weeks.  My first u/s isn't until Monday, and I'll be 10w1d then.  It has seemed like forever waiting, but I know that if there is a heartbeat, they will for sure be able to hear/see it then.

  • Just wait. I'll be 9 weeks at mine (I think). My OB doesn't see you before 8 weeks unless you are high risk.

Lol, good point about the 7 week mark!! Listen to her!! Or, just wait out the extra week!! This waiting game sucks! Good luck!

  • I am not going till week nine, the nurse told me they genreally see weomen between week 8 and 10 unless they are highrisk, so maybe if your doctor thinks you should come in at 6 I would do it, especially if you are on any medications that they are worried about

  • My OB suggests waiting until 8 weeks so you can see everything and in case you ovulated late and are not quite what you think you are.  If you are early six weeks or late 5 weeks you may not see the HB.
  • I called to make an appointment and was told the dr. doesn't see anyone until at least 10 weeks.  I should be about 10 1/2 weeks at my first appointment on May 6th.  They said that's when the heartbeat can be heard with a doppler.  This is also my first pregnancy, estimated due date 11/30!
  • I went in for my first appointment 5 days after my BFP. I was about 4 and a half weeks, then I had my first ultrasound at 6 weeks. We saw a heartbeat and a little spec. Its up to you but I'd want to go early!

  • I would pick 8 weeks so that you see more on the ultrasound.
