TTC after 35

Putting my dilemma out there for you all to help me. . .

OK so this is going to be long so sorry in advance but I really need some input and guidance.

TTC #1 3 failed IUI's starting 2006-2007.  Spontaneous PG with DD late 2007.  Had her May 2008 at age 34.

TTC #2 Never went back on BCP after having DD.  Continued with acupuncture and fertility blend pills  both me and my DH.  After 1 year still not PG.  Called my OB started me on Clomid but (not responding like normal) was going to try Clomid for 3 months but because I had issues with #1 I asked to just try Clomid for 1 cycle and then get the referral to my RE.

Go to RE and start injections of Menopur Cycle 1 & 2 poor response to 2 amps only get one to two follies late in cycle (like CD 20 or so)

Cycle 3 had me do 3 amps drugs CD 5-9 and had three follies and lots of little ones NP was really concerned about multiples but let me trigger anyway Cycle 3=BFN

Had to skip next round due to hyper stimulated ovaries

Ok there is the history of all my BFN so onto my problem. . .

I went in today (I just turned 36) for the last ultrasound before my trigger (CD12) and my right ovary has 1 follie at 18 and one smaller one probably around a 12. My left ovary has 4 follies at around 16-17.  My RE recommends scrapping the cycle. It upsets me to do this but after what he told us about mulitples I would never be able to reduce a pregnancy.  I asked him what my chances are if we don't trigger and do TI.  He said it was about the same as doing the IUI.

What do you all think with my history should I give it a shot with TI and hope for the best or should I be scared of multiples and scrap the cycle? Any info you could give me would be extremely helpful.  Let me also say that DH wants to at least do TI at home and doesn't seem to be afraid of trips or quads!!

Thanks for any help you can give me.

  • Its a tough situation for sure.  I don't have personal experience, but I am with you that I don't think I could reduce if there were multiples.  But if you have 5 or 6 and don't reduce, there can be significant health risks to you and the babies, so either way, its tough.  Forgive me, what is TI?

Its hard to tell you what to do, but if it were me, I would probaby not take the chance on multiples.  Good luck figuring it out.  I am sure you will come to a decision that is right for you and your family.

I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

  • What are your chances of multiplies? Is it a small chance? If so, I would do TI. My aunts friend went against her Drs order, did her trigger and got pregnant with triplets. So its smart to not take that chance.
  • That's a tough one to think about. I would have a hard time thinking about reducing a pregnancy if there were multiples, too. I would say to trust your doctor. If he's not comfortable moving ahead with that many follies, then I would abstain this month. It's hard when you want to get pregnant, though! What does your DH think?

Thanks Izz.  I'm not sure I want the risk either.  I just wish that the more eggs the better your chances of at least getting one embryo not 5!  My Dr said that he would have more control if I did IVF.  Don't know what to think anymore. :(

My RE said just last month that happened to one of their other patients who was upset about scrapping the cycle too so she just did it on her own at home and ended up with trips.

Lizzy of course my DH wants to go for it at home but I'm the one who would be PG so he'll go with whatever I decide. I agree with this the more I think about it.  I mean with all my negatives it probably would just be a BFN anyway BUT given my luck I would let fly this month and end up with a litter!!! Thanks for your insight.

  • I would go for TI. I know there is a chance of multiples but put it in God's hands.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • I would listen to the doctor.

FWIW - What you're contemplating doing is exactly what Kate Gosselin did, except she was much younger.  High order multiples would be very dangerous for you and the babies.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

  • Im sorry that you are in this situation.  It really is a tought place to be.

This is just my opinion (I will support you and cheer you on whatever you decide) - but I wouldnt do IUI or TI this cycle.  You have at least 5 mature follicles.  That is just too many.  There is a real possibility that more than 2 could fertilize and implant.  There are way too many risks with HOM.  You really should be afraid of triplets or quads.  They are almost always born early and health problems are very common.  Also you dont have a history of multiple failed cycles with lots of follicles.  From what you wrote above you only had one failure with more than 2 follicles.  That cycle could have been a fluke and this cycle you could have 4 or 5 good eggs.

Good luck with whatever you decide.  Hugs and prayers being sent your way.

  • Go with what your doc says, he has more experience than anyone, just to be safe.  He has seen it all I'm sure and wouldn't give you bad advice.  Whatever you decide, Gl ((Hugs))
