I'm not showing yet, but some things are starting to get snug. I have a wedding next weekend, and am worried about fitting into the nicer dresses I have - so I'm considering doing some shopping. I'd like to start with a little black dress, to get me through the wedding, and maybe to throw a sweater over for work.
What are your favorite stores to buy maternity clothes?
What pieces do you find essential? Just base it on my current wardrobe?
If you've been pg in the summer before, what to avoid? Skirts vs shorts, long dress vs short?
I've curvy to begin with, (big butt and boobs), and maybe 10 pounds more than I'd like to be - what are some styles that works for that or doesn't work for that as I become even curvier?
Any other tips?
Re: where to start with maternity clothes?
I love everything in this store

However for early pregnancy, I really liked Old Navy's elastic waist pregnancy jeans. Not the full panel, but the elastic waist. it's a very important distinction.

My favorite is my black yoga pants from Motherhood Maternity--I can lounge in them at night, or wear them to bed, or just wear them on the weekends.
I also like the tops from Motherhood Maternity and the Gap. I got a a couple of short sleeve t-shirts in different colors--good value, varies my wardrobe.
My demi panels and under the belly jeans worked in early 2nd trimester. But now only the full panel Mavi jeans (with really stretchy material) from A Pea in the Pod works for me now--I got them on sale.
Honestly, sometimes I will just take one day on the weekend, go around to the different maternity stores and try on different maternity clothes. And then I will figure out a good budget and purchase those maternity clothes in the future.
But at this point, I have 15 more weeks, I am not really wanting to spend more money, but I know that I will probably get some better fitting maternity clothes for 3rd trimester either at JC Penney's or Motherhood Maternity.
I've only started some maternity shopping, but I really like the destination maternity near me - has Motherhood and Pea in the Pod in the same store. I think everything I've bought has been Motherhood.
So far I LOVE the plain t-shirts (just a basic T, but longer and stretchy, good material) - usually run about 12$, and there's buy one get one free, or buy two get one free sales all the time.
I also really like their secret fit belly pants - I have a pair of plain black pants, capri khakis, and capri jeans.
Only other item I've gotten is a cute pink knit tip, has a ribbon detail just over the bump, so you tie the ribbon in a bow over the bump - makes it very clear that it's a happy bump and not just a fat bump! This was the first thing I bought, since I had a wedding shower and an awards dinner thing to go to when I was clearly showing but still at the "fat or baby" stage...

ooo and the regular yoga pants from Express, they have the fold up waist, and fit SO comfy. I still wear those all the time, and think they'll continue to fit..
As for day-to-day, I'm still wearing my pre-preg jeans to work mostly, with a hair tie looped thru the button hole and a longer shirt over. Just now getting to the point where I think I have to suck it up and buy a pair of maternity jeans from Motherhood, too...

I'm super cheap and can't stand spending lots of $$ on clothes I'll only wear a few months. Here's what I did:
*Discount stores (Ross, Marshall's, goodwill/salvation army) all have maternity clothes and I've found some adorable tops. Old Navy is also cheap and we have one near us that sells maternity. I've also had luck at Target sales.
*I invested in only 2 pairs of maternity pants: black dress pants & a pair of jeans I got at Old Navy for $11. I luckily wear scrubs for work, so I don't have to have much of a wardrobe for work.
*Borrow! My sister, SIL, and girl friends have all offered maternity clothes to me which have been wonderful!
Now that I'm swollen and huge, I can't imagine wearing anything that would show off my "cankles"... just FYI for summertime.
