Breastfeeding

avoiding becoming the snack-bar

Baby Bix is almost 3 weeks. Usually he goes 2.5 - 3 hours between feedings during the day, but sometimes it's as little as an an hour to 90 minutes. I'm trying to feed him on demand, yet avoid becoming the human snack-bar where he feeds out of boredom and then falls asleep.

Is it normal to be feeding this often?

He roots and mouths pretty much all of the time, so how do I tell when he is REALLY hungry?

Any advice would be appreciated!

There is a 3 wk growth spurt so you might be going through that.

You could consider introducing a pacifier. A hungry baby won't be content w a paci, but one who just wants to suck will.

    Hey lainey!

E did the same thing around 1.5 weeks and we introduced a pacifier.  It's been a lifesaver.

  • Sounds totally normal!
  • You really need to feed on demand and not worry about being the "snack bar" and getting on a schedule until you are past the 6-8 week mark.  Your baby is growing very quickly right now and it is not uncommon for babies to cluster feed (sometimes as often as 30 min between feedings) during growth spurts.

this.  At 3 weeks old your baby may want to eat all the time.  Don't worry, you can't form bad habits at that age.

    Great advice. Yes

  • Thanks ladies. I'll feed as needed until it seems like we should do otherwise. This morning it was 3 times in under 90 minutes, but then he passed out cold for 3 hours. I guess his needs will tell my body how much to produce! ;)
