Anyone not using an infant car seat?

Jumping over from third tri...

I registered for both an infant car seat and a convertible car seat for when LO outgrows the infant seat.  Both car seats have been purchased off our registry and now I'm wondering if it would be a better idea to return the infant car seat for the money (almost $200) and buy other things we need and aren't getting at the shower.  I plan to be wearing the baby as much as possible but I know it also won't be all the time and the infant seat will come in handy when LO is sleeping and we can just bring him/her inside in seat.

So, any opinions on the car seat options are appreciated...

Thanks!

Re: Anyone not using an infant car seat?

  • It would definitely be more cost effective to keep the convertible seat and return the infant seat. However, remember ... convertible seats are generally not considered as safe for infants as an infant seat. If you think about it, it makes sense ... the infant seat is made especially for an infant's size ... their small body and thus would likely have a better, more secure fit.

On the other hand, I've known a few people who've used the convertible seats with infants with no problem. Sorry ... I guess not much help ...

  • While you definitely don't "need" the infant seat, it sure as heck is convenient.  And I honestly don't know for sure if it's safer or not.  Different studies show different things, but I think the way pp described it is good - the infant seat is made for an infant, and they're much more snug, etc.

Never wake a sleeping baby!  It's so much easier to run errands with the seat - pop it out of the car & into the stroller and go if baby is sleeping, etc. Plus, it's nice to be able to carry baby to/from house to car that way, rather than the convertible seat.

  • An infant seat is definitely more convenient.  You can take it into restaurants, etc. and have a place for the baby to sit, and we also use it in a snap'n'go stroller.  If $$ is a concern you can always return it for a less expensive one-- our Graco Snugride 32 was $80, and it always gets one of the highest safety ratings.

  • I always thought that the carseat would be so convenient for taking it in and out of stores, the house, etc. but I have come to prefer to just leave it in the car and wear my DS. I prefer the bonding and find the carseat really uncomfortable to lug around. He is still young enough to be able to go between carseat and carrier without waking up fully.  also, he really hates being strapped in his seat when he can see me, so it doesn't work  for us  in restaurants or in the store.

  • 1st off... you should probably not wear your baby until they gain stronger neck control. That is what the manufactures of all the slings say. https://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/03/12/earlyshow/living/ConsumerWatch/main6292012.shtml

Also, it depends on your child. Mine loves to hangout and be held but not often. She would rather be independant and kick and stretch out her legs( actually more like failing them around). She better end up being a dancer, soccer player or swimmer with the amount of kicking she does

SO  it would not be a bad idea to get the carrier especially if someone has already purchased it for you and you don't need another HIGH PRICE ticket item. Plus when LO is sleeping in the car and you need to go to the store or put her in the stroller you don't have to disturb them. :)

  • I really like the infant seat even though I usually take him out

In the 1st weeks we were finger feeding and it was really convenient to put him in it on the table

When we go to restaurants (2-3 times a week) we keep him in it (and put it on the snap n go stroller).  He doesn't like the Moby when I'm sitting, he gets squished

When it's hot or cold outside, it's nice to have the seat inside, put him in, then take him to the car rather than putting him in a hot or cold seat.

What about exchanging your top of the line seat for something in the $100 range?

There are lots of other carriers than slings and many are great for newborns.

And people have been carrying their babies from birth since the beginning of time.  Only the upright carriers need better neck control.  If the baby is laying down it doesn't matter if it's in a sling or a car seat or a bouncey, etc...

Thanks for all the advice.  I guess we will have to weigh our options - I totally get the convenience of the infant seat but it doesn't look like we are getting much off our registry and we don't have the $$ to get what's left so it would help alot to return.  Also, the convertible is for newborns 5lbs and up, so I'm not concerned about the safety.

    Thanks again ladies!

  • we have an infant car seat, but it stays in the car most of the time, we are both awul at getting it in and out, shes much more disturbed by it beig moved than by getting picked up and stuck in a carrier.

-She's 1 week old and we use the beco and moby to carry her around, people can look, but haven't tried to touch her.  Her head is well supported in both of them, so I feel it's fine for her to be in them, I would de not put her in a bag or c-shaped sling right now though.

  • We don't have an infant seat and I don't wish I did in the least.  We intentionally got a convertible seat that was safe starting at 5 lbs with the intention of using it from birth and buying an infant seat if we felt it was necessary, and we are both glad that we haven't spent the money!  I usually wear DD when we are out and about.

  • We're thinking of moving DS soon into his convertible, but we still need the infant seat.  We'd put it in the trunk for when we need the carrier.  What are you going to do with your LO when you go out to dinner?  Where will you put him/her?  What about if you don't want to wear him/her and want to go grocery shopping/to the mall/zoo/wherever.  It can be a PITA when you're trying to reach things or sitting down a lot.  I've always wanted to get rid of mine, but I do need it for at least the first 5-6 months just for things like I said.  As soon as our LO is sitting up well in a high chair, stroller and grocery cart, we move them to the convertible b/c I hate lugging it around, but it is really needed for those first few months.
  • Keep the infant seat. You will be so glad for the ease of popping baby in and out of the car if he/she is snoozing. Plus, you don't know what kind of baby you'll have. I planned on wearing DD all the time (I have a variety of super pricey slings and carriers) and she much prefers to hang out in the stroller.
