1st Trimester

What to eat?

I just found out I was pregnant this week, but I have been noticing that I am a lot more hungry than normal.  I can eat a meal and a couple hours later my stomach is growling.  I have never been like this in the past, so I can only assume it is the start of a pregnancy symptom.

When I do get hungry between meal, I do try to eat something healthy, like fruits or veggies or something that isn't junk.

I was wondering if anyone knows if it would be okay for me to drink protein shakes.  I know that when you're pregnant you're supposed to get a lot of protein, so I thought that this might help me get my protein and might keep me from getting hungry so often.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated?  I really don't think this is all in my head, but who knows, I guess it's possible.

Thanks,
Rachel

Re: What to eat?

  • I was like this with my first pg, and gained way too much weight. The protein shake idea sounds great, just make sure it's not your only source of protein (as you know). V8 juice if you can stomach it, can be filling and healthy. Cheese sticks and almonds are a good "snack" option other than fruit and veggies. GL!

I've actually heard mixed reviews on protein shakes. Lean meats and stuff like that are usually better I think (also protein shakes might make you bulk up?).. Usually when I get hungry between meals I try to eat something that's higher in fiber. Keeps you fuller, and will also help with the constipation. Wink

  • This is my first pregnancy, and I really don't want to gain a ton of weight.  I think your suggestions are a great idea.  I will be sure to have other sources of protein, I'm just hoping to find more filling "snacks" that will hopefully keep me from eating all the time.  I have already noticed that if I go too long with out eating, as my stomach is growling, I begin to feel sick.

I will the higher fiber foods and see how it goes.

    Thanks a bunch!

You might want to check with your doctor first because some of them are NOT safe for women to take since there are extra vitamins in the shake. For instance, too much vitamin C can have adverse effects. I would just double check first before taking it.
  • My doctor told me I could drink EAS (brand) protein shakes.  If you drink them, just make sure they are JUST protein.  Some have creatin or added caffine so you just have to be careful.  You can find EAS at Target or Walmart.

Thanks so much.  I might just wait until I talk to my doctors before I do anything that might be bad for the baby.  I don't want to do anything I regret.  However, if it is safe, I will be sure to check these out.

    Thanks again everyone.
