Different RE for ET?

So I received a call from the nurse today saying that my RE had an emergency but that my ET was still on schedule (Sunday, 5dt), but 1 of the 4 other partners would be doing it instead.

I didn't think it was a big deal because the transfer is pretty simple...but then I started thinking....

How will we choose which embryos (if we have a choice...)?  Will he transfer 3 (if available) like my doctor was willing to? He isn't familiar with everything my RE and I have gone through over the last 11 months -- how can he understand what to do?  And so on...

Should I be worried or just go with the flow here?  Has anyone else experienced this?

Thanks!

Re: Different RE for ET?

  • Where I went, I had my main RE.  Other REs at the practice did my ultrasounds, my main RE did my ER, but the day of the actual transfer, an another RE did the procedure.

When we went in for the transfer, I had never met the RE who was going to do the procedure, but she was awesome.  I loved her.  She came in the room and had all my embryo information, which she explained to us.  We didn't chose which two to transfer, but I don't think the patient gets to chose, I think the doctor chooses the best looking ones.  She had my records and knew that the most we could transfer was two because we're relatively young.  She asked me and my DH if we wanted to transfer two or just one.   She left that up to us.

If your RE was going to transfer 3, I feel that should be in your records. I know you might be uncomfortable with this new RE, but I feel you should trust that he/she knows what he/she is doing.  As you said, it is a really simple procedure.  I would just go with the flow.  GL!

  • My RE didn't do my ER or ET which I wasn't really expecting but all went fine. My RE had only wanted us to try one embie the first time d/t age. This RE explained the grading to us and explained which embie the team choose for us. Then they left it up to us we could put in as many as we wanted the nurse said. The nurse said if we wanted to be crazy and put 4 in then that was our choice. The Re wouldn't give his input since he didn't know us. All he said is that I'm sure you discussed risk of multiples etc with your own RE. He offered us alone time to decide. We only had one that would be freezable so we opted to put both back. Good luck!

  • At the practice where I go, I have a main RE, but for ER and ET they rotate days so whoever is on duty on the day I go does the ER or ET. My RE always follows up, but it hasn't been a problem.

  • Thanks for the comments, ladies.  Last time I only had two to transfer so the decision was easy.  I don't know how many will still be viable tomorrow.  I was thinking that if there are 4, I will transfer 2 and freeze 2.  But if there are 3 - I want them all in there!  My doctor and I have discussed this before and because of my age and egg quality we agreed on  transferrring 3.

I guess I just wait and see what tomorrow brings.

Thanks again for your comments.  Happy Saturday!
