Baby Names

Boy Name...Davis

My maiden name is Davis and I have always wanted to use it as a name for a boy.  When I was pregnant with DD, my husband said no, that is was a last name and would not consider it.

Now that we're getting ready to TTC #2, names are on my mind again.  We have always agreed on Noah Andrew...but I do feel that Noah is becoming too popular (even thought I picked it out a long time ago.)

Do you think that Davis is only a last name?  If not, how can I convince DH otherwise?

Re: Boy Name...Davis

  • I think it could be cute for a first name, but it might get confusing.  My friend named her baby girl Mckenna, which was her mom's maiden name.  It got weird because they called their grandma "grandma mckenna" and stuff.  It could work though.

  • It is not awful but I really don't like Davis as a fn. Maybe a mn would not be so bad since it has meaning.

    I love Noah Andrew, FWIW.

  • There are three Davis' (fn) in my town - I think its a great name.

  • I am all for using a last name as a first name (as long as it is a normal one) if there is significance to it. Just picking a random last name as a first name is weird to me.

That being said, I really like the name Davis in general. I think it is better than Noah which is way too biblical and popular for me.

  • I like the name Davis for a first name, I think it sounds really nice.
  • I love it.  I know the cutest little Davis, and his name came from his mom's maiden name as well.

  • I like it more for a middle name, but it's a cute first name too!
  • I personally would not choose it, but I have heard it as a fn before. It's no different than Carter, which is also a ln that is commonly used as a fn. If your DH really hates it, lobby for it to be DS's mn. :)
  • I know a 6mo old named Davis...I have no issue with it as a first name, especially since it has significance to you.

  • I think Davis is great for a first name. I've heard Noah is becoming very popular but I have yet to meet one little boy/baby named Noah.

  • One of my best friends in high school was name Davis.  I loved it!
  • I really like Davis! I especially like it since it has family meaning to you, so I think it would work great!

I know a 50ish year old man named Davis, who is just so hilarious :), so I also have a good association with the name.

It looks like it has been in the Top 500 for baby boy names since forever, maybe that will convince your DH?

  • I don't love it but I don't hate it.  I'm sort of eh about it.

  • To me it's a last name, but since it's your maiden name, I would use it for a middle name. I really like Noah Andrew though.
  • my DH has a cousin named Davis. So yes it does work for a first name too.
  • I think it could work as a first name.

  • I like it alot.
  • I know a girl who's maiden name was Davis and they did just this. My sister did the same thing with our maiden name. It was weird at first (especially since I wasn't married at the time), but it fits him and it's grown on me.

  • I think of it as a last name. I like the suggestion of using it as a mn. Andrew Davis sounds nice.

  • Davis is cute!  I like Davis Andrew..  Not a fan of Noah, sorry

  • I love it. My Father-in-laws name is Dave I think Davis is adorable to carry on the name. DH isn't a fan. I say go for it.
  • davis is actually quite common as a first name- show it to your husband in a baby book. it's also a family name for me and i plan to use it [although as a middle name because our last name begins with S].

  • I like using the maiden name as a first name and Davis is a really great name! I also like Davis Andrew and understand that DH isn't on board. I thought of using my maiden name, Haller as a first name and was quickly vetoed... But then my name is more unusual than Davis. GL!
