When you start cow's milk...

Do you give them whole milk or something like 2% or skim??  I always thought it was whole.  I have one friend who gave her son 2%, but it was something to do with his stomach issues, and it was dr. recommended.  A lady here at work said she gave her daughters skim from the get go.  So, ??  Am I wrong for thinking whole milk?

Re: When you start cow's milk...

  • They absolutely need whole milk at this time.  They still need the extra fats from the whole milk - unless your dr specifies otherwise I"d go w/ Organic Whole Milk.

This is what I thought also, but I have been asked on several occasions if I'm going to start with 2% or skim, and I was just wondering if I had missed something!

  • I was told whole milk until at least two.  Allie is such a lightweight and picky eater that I may keep her on it longer than that.

  • Apparently, the AAP has changed their position and skim milk is a "preferred source of calcium".  Prior to looking these links up, I thought that you were supposed to give whole milk from 12mos-24mos and then you switch to 2% or skim...

IMHO, my child doesn't show any signs of obesity and unless our Pedi strongly suggests otherwise, we'll be sticking to whole milk. I also use all full-fat products too (milk butter cheese), and while we're no longer strictly organic I do try to keep his fruits and veggies organic.

  • We were told by our Pedi to not start whole milk until 12 mos. No earlier. When we went to Lyla's 2 year well visit I asked about when to reduce her to 2% or skim milk because I had heard of other parents switching at this age. We were told based on Lyla's weight (which was below 50%) that we needed to keep her on whole milk because she needed the extra fat. We were suggested to use organic but it wasn't forced on us. We don't buy organic, not for any reason, we just don't.

I will bring this question up again when we go to her 3 year well visit and I imagine now they will tell us we can switch to 2%. We'll see what they say. If they suggest whole milk then we will continue giving her whole milk.

  • I'll just ditto what everyone else has said. We are still weaning off bm and are using whole milk, although we don't buy organic.

DD is such a lightweight that I think she'll be on whole milk for a long, long time.

  • Thanks everyone, I hadn't planned to start before 12 months at all, I have just been asked several times here recently...and being asked again today prompted me to come here.

J is in the 75% for weight, so we will probably go whole milk until 2, unless our pedi suggests otherwise for any reason.  Or, unless he is allergic (DH is), which I hope he is not!

  • I'd also add, avery is less than 10% on the weight chart now. She needs the extra calories she can get
  • We started with whole milk when she was 12 mos., but her stomach just wasn't ready for it yet....even though she loved it.  Tried again at 14 months and now she's just fine with milk.  She's also at the lower end of the weight scale, so I have no problem keeping her on whole milk.
  • We give DS Kroger organic whole milk. He's done good with it. We started him on it around 11 mos. I think. We never did formula from a cup so we started transitioning before he was one. I need to ask our pedi next time we go in if we should go down to 2% but DS is definitely not big by any means so we may stick with whole for a while longer.
