Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Implanon

I went in today to get Mirena, but because I didn't have a vaginal delivery (or dilate at all) I wasn't able to get it. Instead, I got Implanon.

The insertion didn't take long; a few minutes tops, compared to the hour and a half I spent in the waiting room. If you hadn't heard of it, Implanon is a sub-dermal implant that your doctor puts in the underside of your upper arm, and lasts for 3 years. It didn't hurt much, and the only side effect I've had so far is that the area around where it was inserted is sore and a little feverish (which is normal, and common).

Anybody else using this method of birth control? Or, have you in the past? I'd never heard much about it, but according to the literature I recieved at Planned Parenthood, it's the most effective form of BC on the market. Take that, Hitchhiker-inducing NuvaRing!

Re: Implanon

  • This worries me. I am going in on tuesday to get my mirena and I had a c-section. I dilated to a 4 though..will that affect it? I hope I am able to get it.

I really do not know much about this at all.  I have a friend who had it.  Grossed me out because she could make it move under her skin and poke out and stuff Tongue Tied

How does it work?  Does it use the same hormones as the pill?

  • Had they known when I went in how tight my cervix was, they could have given me a drug to soften it. It would have taken an hour and a half. Unfortunately, by the time we discovered that, I'd already been there for an hour and a half, and the NP was only going to be there for another 45 minutes.

I could have gone back on Monday, but I feel pretty good about my decision.

  • I've never heard of it. Just wanted to let you know that I had my little fella on Sun. and I am never having sex again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thats my BC!
  • I never used that method of BC but we learned about it in high school. It is the #1 most effective BC behind abstaining. I know that when we learned about it years ago, you had to go back in every few months and get new ones inserted. Good luck!!!

    Here's the website.

Basically, Implanon is an estrogen-free hormonal implant. So, it runs off of progestin. Otherwise, it's very similar to your hormonal IUC, but it's inserted in your arm instead of your cervix.

  • It sounds interesting. I always thought it would look weird. Can you see it? I know that we don't want more but...I think we should wait until we make it permanent. And I do not trust BCP and I will never.

I dilated 4 cm and ended w/ a c-section also and my ob recommended Mirena as a long term BC because my mentality right now is of the "Never doing this baby thing again, we can adopt a teenager." I haven't gotten it yet because before DD ever happened we had planned on two to three kids close together (FI is set on changing my mind) so the five year Mirena isn't quite what we want. I'll have to look into this Implanon though...

  • So it's effective for 3 years.

What happens if you decide to try for another baby before that? Is it removable?

  • It can be removed at anytime and fertility returns fairly quickly
