carseat in the car

Do you leave the handle up or put it back?

Re: carseat in the car

  • I used to leave it up until my sister told me I'm supposed to put it back. So now I put it back. I have forgotten a few times though.

  • I usually put it back, but DH leaves it up.  I am worried that it is a safety hazard.  How, I do not know.  Does anyone know if/why it could be dangerous?

  • I leave it up. I always used to put it back, until I read something that someone posted about not having to.  It is acceptable for most car seats.  I believe for mine, it is safe in the straight up and all the way back position, but not the middle one.

btw-what the heck is the middle position for?!

  • Part of me is thinking that if it really mattered the manufacturers would tell you where it needs to be. Another part of me says that leaving it up is like extra support if God forbid the car were to roll. Another part of me tells me to put it down so it doesn't snap and cause a hazard. Does it really matter???

  • I leave it up because I don't really think there's a "right" answer to this one!  I've heard both ways, some say the handle acts as a roll bar and should be left up, others say you might as well throw your baby into the middle of the ocean if you're going to leave the handle up.  I went crazy trying to find the "correct" answer to this one!  So we leave it up because we hang a couple toys from it to entertain DS (which I've also heard conflicting safety reports on).

  • Well I am also a horrible mom because I have a mirror in the back so I can keep an eye on him. We spend a lot of time in the car...so sue me...

  • Wow, it never even occurred to me that this could be a problem.  I leave mine up because I want DD to be able to play with the toys that attach to it, and she wouldn't be able to do that if I put it back.
  • I am so glad to see others are conflicted about this.  DH likes to keep it up and we do have toys attached to it.  and we also have a mirror in the back, though I keep moving it accidentally when I get DD out of the car so I mostly just look at the back of my own seat, LOL.

  • We leave ours up.  I believe our owner's manual specifically addressed this and said any position is acceptable.  We have a Chicco.
