Infertility

IVF gals with Insurance Coverage ?

I am trying to plan ahead for IVF after I lose enough weight for us to proceed. I know our insurance will not cover all the meds so I am planning on needing at least $5000 for drugs for 1 IVF. My questions is, does your insurance cover cryopreservation of extra embies? I know all plans are different, but I am wondering if any insurance covers this. Also if you have had to freeze some of your embies, what is the cost involved?

I want to get an idea of how much we will need to be able to do the entire cycle +freezing incase we are lucky enough to need it.

TIA

Re: IVF gals with Insurance Coverage ?

  • ours only covers cryo for up to a year after that we have to secure cryo on our own. I haven't been lucky enough to have any embies to freeze so I can't help you with the second question :( sorry.

  • I haven't actually done it yet, but I know mine does not cover cryopreservation or PGD or the ICSI part. They do cover half of the meds and half of the rest, though. I would call your insurance company. Lately my insurance has been denying us for all sorts of things and it's better to know beforehand!

  • I have United Healthcare - $10k max on treatment, $2500 max on meds.  After many calls, questions, etc, I found out that initial cryo will be covered as well as 2 years of storage.  Our OOP is 15% of usual and customary.  So....several thousand still needed and I have NO idea how we're paying for it once we receive the bills, but at least we'll get billed as opposed to paying up front....I believe.  We have an FSA we loaded with $3k to cover DS and OOP on some of the meds and bills after the fact.  I could have gone up to $5k, but I do need a paycheck. LOL.  All told, our insurance will basically cover 1 cycle of IVF and after that we are going to be totally OOP.   That's a TON of info, but I hope it helps :)

    this is mine exactly!

  • Cryo was not covered with mine.  I think it was going to be about $1200 for the freezing and first year storage.  I didn't have any to freeze, so I'm not exactly sure of the details.

Your RE should be able to provide you a breakdown of costs, and I agree to call your insurance, since each one is different.

  • cyro is not covered by my insurance either. just ivf meds and the procedure (incl. icsi and assisted hatching).
  • All my meds, appts, and procedures are covered.  Cryopreservation was not.  It was $750 - but since none made it to freeze we were reimbursed.

  • mine doesn't cover anything to do with cryo, which is really funny to me, because they cover unlimited FETs. The only thing they limit is fresh cycles.

  • My insurance has covered everything - including all procedures, meds and cryopreservation of our extra embryos. I only pay regular co-pays for meds and for office visits. I had no costs whatsoever for cryo. GL!
  • My coverage does not cover cryopreservation.  The extra cost is $1200 for the first year.  I also have $7500 in med coverage, my meds cost $3850 for the one cycle, and I paid a deductible of around $130 for them.

  • Our cycle costs included cryo for 2 years--after that it is $240 a year and insurance doesn't cover it. The insurance did cover it for the 2 years that were included in the cycle...
  • I didn't know what my insurance covered for cryo but when I went to the RE's office the other day they let me know we have to pay $650 to keep our little embies frozen. Our insurance has a $25,000 lifetime coverage for treatments. We didn't have to pay anything for this past fresh cycle other then co pays.

You can probably check with your HR department to get some info about what's covered.
