solid feeders: is your LO an unsupported sitter?

I've read from kellymom that a baby isn't ready unless an unsupported sitter. of those of you feeding solids, is this the case? i have a bumbo that the LO can sit in to feed, but am wondering if i should just wait it out. he seems pretty hungry though and he is BF at home and takes 8 oz formula bottles at daycare

Re: solid feeders: is your LO an unsupported sitter?

  • We just started solids last night and he's pretty darn close to being an unsupported sitter.  He doesn't sit for very long periods of time, but we waited until we felt pretty darn sure he was ready

  • Nope, Most literature and the AAP recommend that they have good head control and can sit WITH support. They do not need to sit unsupported.
  • DD sits with support and was definitely ready for solids at 4 months.  Now when we feed her she gets so excited and basically attacks the food until there is none left.  It's just my opinion, but if your LO is old enough, you have talked with your pedi, and you feel like LO is ready then give it a shot.  If after a few attempts things aren't going so well, then just stop and wait a few more weeks.  LO will let you know if he/she is ready. GL & have fun!
  • Nope. We feed my baby in his bouncer seat and it works very very well. Siggy link in my blog as some photos and a video if you're interested.

    Good luck!

  • Yes. We waited until he could sit with minimal support, and within the few weeks that he's been having occasional solids, he's become an expert at sitting.  I had read in multiple resources that this was important, and since we're teaching him to self-feed (not spoon-feeding) that was very important.

  • LO is on the small side of the growth chart and he dropped percentiles from his 2 month to 4 month so the pedi had me start him on rice cereal after his 4 month appt.  He is most definately NOT a supported sitter.  He is a great supported and eats his rice cereal like it's going out of style.
