I was induced 1 day after my due date. We talked about it with our OB for a week before and decided that I wanted this baby OUT. I was already making progress, so I was a much better candidate than someone going in with absolutely none.
Looking back on it, I'm *SO* glad I was induced. Soph was only 1 day past due and she was 8 pounds, 4 ounces. If we had gone another week or 2, she probably would have been a 9 pounder. Uh, no thanks.
My OB asked me get to the hospital at 6PM -- They immediately hooked me up to the IV. Then it was around probably 7-8PM before they sprayed that gel stuff on my cervix, I'm totally blanking on what it's called right now. That made my contractions start up almost immediately, and I could feel them -- though they were VERY small.
I think around midnight they started the Pitocin. This really got the contractions going. At some point, I finally asked for the epi. I tried to hold of as long as I could but it got to a point where I felt like the contrax were coming one after another and I was grabbing the side rails of the bed to get through them. I was more scared for the epi than I was anything, but it seriously wasn't bad - I barely felt it. When you've been laboring for so long, it's like nothing. I can't remember now but they came in later and broke my water to speed things along. Man, did it ever! They kept switching me side to side because it was making progress very nicely for some reason. Before I knew it I went from 5cm to 10cm and I was ready to go! From start to finish, the entire birth was about 14 hours I think.
I had a pretty much perfect birth experience, no complications whatsoever. It can be scary going in for an induction, especially after hearing all of the horror stories out there. It seems so many people believe that induce = C-section. It's certainly was not the truth for me...I wouldn't change a thing!
Yes and no. According to one doc in my practice who went by my LMP I was 5 days over due, according to another who went by 6 week u/s I was 3 days early. I went into labor on my own.
Can you ladies explain to me why so many are induced? I think all but two of my 11 friends, who had babies last year, were induced and one was a scheduled C-section. I was 14 days late. No idea how much longer they would have let me stay in there!
ETA: 11 births: 6 vaginal, 5 c-sections. Crazy, right?

It's a personal decision. Something that Jordan & I, along with my OB, discussed a lot. I definitely did not want to go way overdue and I'm glad I didn't because Sophia was a pretty good sized baby. It just depends on your wishes & what your OB is comfortable with. Luckily for me, my OB explained everything and we decided it was time to serve Sophia her eviction notice.

Yes, my doctors didn't want the baby to get too big. It's also not healthy for a baby to be past due too long, I hear not more than 10 days.
Hi Mel, I know it's hard to do, but don't dispair. You're time will come soon. My last days, I couldn't stay still. I went' 4 days over due and was induced 7 days after my due date. We waiting the extra time because I wanted a vaginal birth. My little one didn't feel like coming out on her own so she was evicted.
It was a long process but all in all not too bad. Just be patient because noone ever told me that it takes about 72 hrs. So, bring a book, and make sure you have people keeping you company.
Britt was 2 weeks late. They induced with pitocin. She was born 3 hours after they started the pitocin. Out with 2 pushes. She was ready - just stubborn, I guess. The induction wasn't a big deal for me. Got to the hospital, started the IV, but it got intense after they broke my water. Her heartrate went down, so they said "you have 2 pushes - then we're giving you a c-section..." and in 2, she came out.
Gavin was 10 days late. I was scheduled for an induction on Friday, March 27 (which would have been 11 days). I had my first contraction on Wednesday morning the 25th at 6 AM, I went to the hospital about 10:30 Wednesday evening and he was born Thursday afternoon at 4 PM. They still gave me the pitocin to speed things up. My water didn't break until I had been in the hospital with contractions for quite awhile. They didn't break it. I pushed for 3 hours and they used the vacuum at the end to get him out.
We scheduled the induction for Thursday morning. Wednesday night I told Lil Miss she had 8 hours to do things her way or we were coming in after her. I started cramping at 2:30am, and was in labor for sure by 5am. She was born at 4:27pm that afternoon.
I hope all your LO needs is a good talking to as well! LOL

Thanks. I get that, I was just curious if there were any medical reasons. I'm pretty sure all of my friends were induced just because they were "done" not because of any complications. One friend got induced on her due date because the father was leaving for Iraq in two weeks. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it, just wondering if there were other reasons it's become so common.
