F/U to Speech Assessment

DS had his speech assessment this morning. He just turned 2 and has maybe 5-10 words, but most of them are understandable in context only and not understood by strangers. He also doesn't imitate words or sounds, but he babbles all the time.?
The assessment was done in a play group setting with one other child and mother there. Once DS got in there he was so distracted by the new toys it was next to impossible to get his attention. He didnt respond to any questions or commands.?
The therapist agreed he has an expressive language delay and suspects there's a comprehension delay as well, so she recommended us for more frequent play group therapy dates.?
I find this whole process takes so long (especially so to a concerned mother). He had a hearing test in December and this was the first step since then.?I know he's still young and has time to catch up, but I'm having a hard time with this.?But I'm glad at least now there is a bit of direction and there will be more assessment and speech therapy.?

Re: F/U to Speech Assessment

  • I just posted above you. Our situations sound similar. It's interesting how the different states vary, our assessment was done at our home and I'm pretty sure all of our therapy will be, too (though I'm not sure). We waited about a week and a half for results of the evaluation, and I still haven't seen the report/diagnosis, I just know that he qualified. I really hope it's just speech. Our assesent person was troubled by the way he played with his cars, looking at the spinning wheels too much. :( let's keep updates going. Good luck to both of our boys!

  • That is interesting. Did you do a private speech eval or public? Like Bride2bMO said, when we did the public early intervention eval it was done at our home. He gets group ("class") therapy twice a week and in home once a week. We are just now getting around to doing a private evaluation as well. I'm curious to see how the two differ. With the public eval, in addition to receptive and expressive speech delay they gave him an ASD label.  I will say that yesterday his SLP called us to inform us that he is saying "more" now on a consistent basis. He'll imitate some sounds too (buzz, quack, etc- but he doesn't initiate the sounds himself). Try to keep your chin up- he is only 2! You've probably had a lot of people say that some kids just develop differently. For me, I've had my grandma reminding me daily that my uncle didn't speak until he was 3- and he's an attorney now. I'm sure it will all work out fine!
  • I'm butting in from the 12-24 board.  DS was evaluated when he was almost 17 months old by our state's early intervention.  He had no words, only grunting/pointing.  He followed commands well. His eval was private but at the offices of EI.

He qualified for services but it took three months to get started.  He gets one hour of therapy in our home.  He's been at it since February so almost 3 months and went from just about zero words (he picked up less than 5 while waiting for services), to about 50 now.

I'm amazed at the progress he's made with our therapists help.  I was trying really hard to help him on our own (DH and I work and my mom takes care of him at home), but we were making very little progress.  Our therapist is awesome.  Hope you all have some like her to help your LOs.

  • That's too bad it's been such a long process.

But it sounds like you're on the right track now.  I hope the next steps are productive.
