Unlicensed home daycares?

If you found a great day care and it had impeccable references (including from your own healthcare practitioner who uses it), would you hire them despite not having a current license?

I'm talking about a home setup that I really liked, my MW uses for her baby a few months older than mine, had a license several years ago, maintains all the same regulations (education, safety, vaccinations, child:caregiver ratio, etc.) that would be important.  Financially, it's a bit of a bummer because I don't think we get the tax credit, right?

How did you feel about this in your daycare search?  Has anyone had a bad experience not having a licensed daycare, especially liability-wise?

Re: Unlicensed home daycares?

  • DS is going to an unlicensed in-home DCP, my co-worker's wife, and I am happy because he is with someone I know and trust instead of a stranger.

  • To me it would depend on the person running the place.  If you're comfortable with it and like him/her then I would do it!

I plan on taking my DS to one when childcare is needed; however it's ran by a good friend of ours.

And you're right, no tax credit.  :(

And sorry for all the duplicates, I'll dd as soon as it will let me!

My unlicensed in-home sitter does this too so we can claim the tax credit.
