High-Risk Pregnancy

Terrible ultrasound appt yesterday

So I guess I'm joining you ladies over here on the high-risk board. Yesterday we had an u/s ordered by my doc to monitor fetal growth b/c I had low placental protein levels detected in my 2nd trimester. The baby is absolutely fine anatomically, but is measuring very small for his age. He is only 4.1 pounds when he should be 4.75, which is less than the 10th percentile. I guess my placenta is not providing enough nourishment and the umbilical chord is facing resistance in getting the blood to the baby. On top of that, this has caused me to develop pre-eclampsia. I am so worried now. Have to go in twice a week for fetal non-stress tests and ultrasounds. Could use some words of encouragement from you ladies!  How have you dealt with pre-e and for those with small babies, what have you done to try and nourish yourself and baby more?

  • I can't offer any help, but I hope everything works out well for you and your baby.

  • Ugggh, I totally understand. I am expecting twins (am 32wks 1 day), and one of them has the same scenario that you are describing - increased resistance in cord flow, and small for gestational age (IUGR). Mine was detected at 24wks, and was at home on bedrest for 1 week, in the hospital on bedrest for 6 wks, and now have been back at home on bedrest for a week.

My dr obviously ordered bedrest, increased fluid intake, and reduce stress as much as possible. I don't know exactly what all has helped, but I've increased my dairy intake, and just eaten as much home cooked food as possible (rather than takeout). My baby with IUGR has continued to grow on his growth curve, and that's what matters at this point.

So, my best advice is to take a deep breath, rest as much as you can, and eat as many 'good' calories that you can. Your positives are that the baby weighs over 4 lbs, and you're doing everything you can. Hang in there! And lots of hugs!

  • I am on bedrest due to high bp, but no pre-e yet and I have an ultrasound next week to check on growth. However, this week after strictly following doctor's orders my bp went down some...I would suggest to do exactly as your doctor says. I realized too that I was getting worried over unanswered questions so if it makes you feel better, pick the doctor's brain. My husband comes with me to appointments to ask all those questions I can never remember which helps with some of the stress.

I wish you well and take it easy...everything will work out just fine. We have to maintain those positive attitudes for eachother!

  • Unfortunately, there is really nothing YOU can do to make it nourish the baby better. I had the same issues, and believe me, it is hard to think about when your baby is small because of the disease and there is nothing you can do. My babe was born at 35 weeks, at 4 pounds, 7 oz. He is now 4 weeks old and just thriving. It is amazing how well they can do when they are born...he eats like a champ, and has a big belly now! (He was skinny at birth, you could see his poor little ribs). Just take care of yourself and try to keep baby in there longer and you will do just fine. Good luck to you and baby!
  • I am at risk for delivering early. I am not in the same situation as you are though, but kind of on the baby being small. He suggested that I drink a lot of nestle chocolate milk, strawberry milk. Has the calcium plus some extra calories. I have no idea if that would be something that would help your situation out or not with the other given problems. I hope all goes well... there is good hope though, my daughter was delivered at 25 weeks, and was only 2lbs 6 oz, and once she hit 5 pounds was able to leave the NICU, so almost being that now should be encouraging. I wish the best for you and your baby :)
  • Also, even with a low birth weight, they catch up. My daughter is 5 now, and she weighs 39 pounds, which is right on, she isnt too skinny or too big. She is tall and really smart, tested top of her class for pre k. :)
  • DS was born at 36w4d due to superimposed pre-e. He weighed 5 lb 13 oz and is now about 21 lbs at 15.5 months.
