What does your LO do in the car? My daily commute is about an hour and half on way. Em no longer sleeps and is over it very quickly. She gets bored with my awful singing. I need some car happy tricks.
Your LO spends 3 hours a day in the car? Maybe this is your only viable option, but would it be possible to look into daycares that are closer to your home? IMO, that's an excessive amount of time in the car for a child and should be avoided if possible.
I have a 40 minute commute and DH's is even longer. We opted to put her in daycare closer to the house so that she wouldn't have to be in the car. Plus it gives both of us time to decompress before we get home. Is that an option for you?

I have an hour commute each way. Daycare close to where we live is not an option-we were uncomfortable with neither of us being near him if there was an emergency and since we have no family in the area that could assist, we made the decision that DS would come with me on my commute.
Right now we chat, look at things out the window and talk about what we see, look at some books, play with puzzles. About 1/2 way through the drive he will ask for the Wiggles on his DVD player. I was really against the car DVD player in the beginning, but he really enjoys doing the dances with the Wiggles. This is the only TV he sees during the day so I figure if it gets us both to our destination without tears or tantums, so be it!

My DD doesn't watch any tv either. I thought about getting a dvd player too. I don't think one 30-45 minutes dvd player will harm her. It can be tough, but I feel like the benifit of her being with me all day outway the bad of having a long commute.
My commute is an hour each way, but our daycare is about 2 miles from the house. Didn't want her to have to commute. Plus, DH works about an hour in the opposite direction of me, so if she is close to home she is midway between us if something happens. I would try toys, books, snacks and many distractions. That would not be fun with my DD. She gets upset sometimes during our 5 minute ride to and from daycare.

I did this for 10 months. Than the daycare we where on the waiting list for had an opening. Sweet baby jebus that was the happiest call I ever got. My commute is peaceful now. She isn't stuck in a car for 2-3 hours a day. We are a happier family.
Re: For those of you with a long commute
I've had long commutes before but I put my kids in daycare near the house. They were only in the car for a few minutes.

I completely understand having your child in a daycare close to your job. Mine is 2 minutes from work, 35 from my home.
If I had an hour commute I would do the same. What if there was an emergency and you had to drive an hour to get to them?
I have an Ipod and I just plug it in and put on kids tunes or podcasts, etc.

If you can, find a dc closer to home.
