D.C. Area Babies

What to do with clothes??

Hey ladies, I thought you'd all have some good ideas.  We found out baby#2 is a BOY!! Yay!!  Anyway, so now I have an attic full (literally the amount of clothes we have is crazy) of girl clothes.  DH swears he is done with 2 kids (though I'd like to consider a 3rd someday).  We have limited storage space in this townhouse, so it'd really free up space to get rid of the clothes.

WWYD?

1) keep the clothes just incase we have a 3rd baby someday (I'd say the chances of DH changing his mind are like 5%)

2) consign the clothes at Kid to Kid

3) sell them on Craigslist

4) wait for a big consignment sale, and consign them there

Thanks!

Re: What to do with clothes??

  • congratulations on one of each!!

we are also having a boy this time around and I have been giving away most of DD's girly/pink stuff. I gave away 2 huge bags on freecycle and will give some away to friends or friends of friends who are having girls.

I have never consigned so I don't have any advice regarding that.

what about selling them at a yard sale?

I like the idea of CL b/c it's easy, no fees, and you get to keep all the profits.

Personally, I think it's fine for a girl to wear blue/boyish clothes (but not visa versa), so you can always get rid of the pink stuff and keep your son's clothes for a potential baby #3.

do you have parents or ILs with lots of storage who can hold on to some of the stuff?

  • I think selling on CL would be a pain compared to do consignment, so I vote consignment.  Though I've never done it myself, I think that's what I'll do after this kid starts to grow out of clothes (that is, if it's a girl - if it's a boy, I guess I'll be getting rid of clothes pretty soon too!!)
Wife, Musician, Fed, WW-er, and Mom of three little kids - not necessarily in that order.
  • We have 3 girls so let me tell you we have tons of clothing!! I am consigning a lot of clothes at the end of this month to a sale in Sterling, it is a pain but I'm sure much easier than trying to sell on CL. You have to tag everything and print out labels from their site and pin everything to the clothing (unless you buy the gun thing) After alls said and done I'm sure it will pay off but it takes a long time. I've also given clothing away to family and friends that are having girls too.

  • i think consignment is tough unless the clothes are higher end - janie and jack, hannah andersson, etc.  the profit margin is pretty slim on old navy and the like.  i plan to consign the expensive stuff and give away the cheaper / more worn stuff.  i was given tons of hand me downs, so i need to pay it forward!
  • I've already given away a bunch of DS's 0-6 month clothes since he was a completely different season than #2 will be.  If Dos ends up being a girl, I will probably give them away, sell them at our neighborhood's fall yard sale, or consign them at Kid to Kid.  I don't want to have to bother with the big consignment sale deal.

  • I just found this website the other day called thredup.com.  You can submit whatever you want to give away and then you get in box in return.  All you do is pay for shipping, but if you are in need of new clothes, it might be worth it.

  • Send them to me (totally j/k!).  If you have the room at all I'd keep them for #3.  If not, try to consign the good stuff, then C/L or garage sale the rest and freecycle or donate the leftovers.  We're just keeping all of BabyCrown's stuff since we're planning on 3 (and I joke that I'm just going to stick a pink ribbon in BabyTiara's hair and let her wear all of the boy stuff anyway).
  • I would do some type of consignment.  You don't get as much, but they are out of your house once you drop them off.  One down side to a consignment store is that it takes in-season clothes only, so it would probably take a year to geth through all the clothes.
  • Congrats on a big sister / little brother!  So far, the combination in our house is working out really well - DD adores her baby brother, and he is fascinated by her.

I would give Craigslist a shot - you wouldn't necessarily need to weed out the stuff that's not like-new quality, and you get to keep any profit.  If no one bites on your ad, then consign the really nice stuff / things with tags still on them, and donate the rest to pregnant friends or Good Will or a shelter (or maybe a church that has rummage sales).  I wouldn't wait for a big sale or some other in-the-future reason...once I had them sorted and boxed up, I'd want them out of the house before Baby #2 arrived.  Lots of my DD's clothes were gifts, so if I just gave them away, it's not like I would be wasting our own money.

And I'd keep a few favorite outfits from DD's babyhood (my mom did that for me) for sentiment's sake as well as some basics that you got a lot of use out of.  Maybe one big rubbermaid's worth?  Just in case you have another daughter, you'd have a head-start on her wardrobe.

Ditto this.  I just took a ton of baby stuff down to UCM on Route 1 and they were SO appreciative.
