clomid ?

I have noticed that clomid/iui's do not work for A LOT of people.  My RE wants to keep me on Clomid since I responded last cycle (50mg).  Should this worry me?   What difference is there in Clomid and Femara or Clomid and Injectables?  I am so discouraged and worried.  The RE seemed SO confident that we would get pregnant "pretty quickly" once she got me to ovulate... so why did i get a BFN!!!!!!!!!!!!  UGH

Re: clomid ?

  • If you responded to the Clomid than it's not unreasonable to try it again.  I know that any BFN is hard, but remember that it's usually a 12-20% chance that IUI will work on a given cycle.  So you very well may get pregnant on your 2nd or 3rd cycle...which is long in IF time, but in the grand scheme of things, still fairly "quick."

Wishing you all the luck in the world...hope # 2 is it for you!

  • As long as you are producing follicles & ovulating on Clomid, there isn't a reason to move to injectibles.  Especially if you responded at such a low dose to Clomid - injects would prob overstim you and you'd end up with cancelled cycles.  I don't know anything about Femara so I can't answer that.

I was convinced Clomid wasn't working for me (i was originally with my OB and not being monitored) so with my RE we moved to injects and I ended up with 2 cancelled cycles.  We went back to 150mg of Clomid, I produced one follicle, we did 1 IUI, and I'm pg now.

How many cycles of Clomid have you tried?

Edit:  I see this was your first.  Like PP said, give it 3 tries before giving up on it and trying something else.  Good Luck!

  • A lot of women DO respond well on clomid or femara and do get pregnant.  I got pregnant on 100mg of clomid.

Clomid and femara are different in the way they work (I don't feel comfortable explaining it but hopefully someone else will).  I usually had one follie when doing clomid (femara didn't really work for me) my problem was it didn't help me ovulate sooner so I would still have cycles where I ovulated on day 29.

My RE told me that women my age (38) don't usually respond well on clomid or femara so he prefers to do injections of gonal-f or follitism.

On my first round of gonal-f w/ovidral trigger, I responded VERY well with it (8 total follies, I was doing TI), ovulated the earliest I've ever ovulated and got pregnant. Unfortunately I miscarried but I will do the same as soon as I can start trying again.   I have a friend who didn't respond very well to gonal-f.

Everyone is different so try not to compare other women's experience to your own, you'll just drive yourself crazy.

Well IUI's and clomid have obviously not worked for me.. but we also have MFI.   Even in good circumstances an IUI only has maybe a 25-30% chance (just guessing) of working - kind of like 1 natural cycle doesn't have that high of a chance of success - that's why they tell people to try for 6mths to a year before  worrying...  NOT that you should try iui's/clomid for a year... but i think most people will have to give them at least 3 times depending on what your diagnoses is.  But BFN's suck regardless..

Thanks for the advice ladies.  I have only done 1 cycle on 50mg of clomid and I got one good follie and used trigger to ovulate.  I guess I am being over ridiculous about this I mean it has only been 1 cycle!  It just sucks!  It is good to know that it worked for someone :)

  • If you are responding to Clomid and it isn't messing with your lining or causing any other problems, I guess there really isn't any reason to switch.

But I didn't respond all that well to Clomid and considering injectables can create a "better egg", I moved to them fairly quickly.

You really do need to give it a few more shots..I know BFNs suck but many, many pregnancies happen on IUIs #2+.

I was reading your siggy and we sound similar in that we are both PCOS, both on Met and both have superstud DH's.  I wish you the very best of luck and  hope this next cycle is it for you :)

I agree with this.  It is hard to get that BFN, but you never know, it may work the second time around!

    good luck!
