Sensitive Stomach Pup ??? NTTGPR

Do any of you ladies have a pup with a sensitive stomach? I feed my pup Wellness now and she has been doing OK on it until recently. She would vomit once in a while but it is becoming more frequent. What food do you feed yours?

Re: Sensitive Stomach Pup ??? NTTGPR

  • Our bulldog has a very sensitive stomach and a lot of food allergies.  We ONLY feed her *** Van Patton brand food.  She eats the sweet potato and venison and loves it and we haven't had a problem since we put her on it 2 years ago.  I would suggest looking at their selection (they also make treats that wont upset their stomach) and pick one to stick with.... slowly over several weeks change the food other wise it will just make her more sick.  The only *** Van Patton I will not suggest is the one that is "fish and.." something... it smells AWFUL and it only makes the dog breath smell worse too!

  • Purina Dog Chow.

Both of my dogs have sensitive stomachs, but they do ok with this brand.  If they vomit, we switch them to brown rice until their stomachs settle.  Also, if they have diarrhea we give them a canned pumpkin and it clears it right up.

Hope this helps!  Feel better puppy!

  • Our bulldog has a sensitive stomach (of course, if it were up to him he would still eat anything and everything).

We feed him Nutro Natrual Choice. I'm not sure that it is specifically designed for sensitive stomachs, but it seems to work for him... and his coat is super soft!

  • Hi!  I have this problem with my greyhounds.  A lot of dogs have food intolerance to chicken and rice (especially chicken) which are the main ingredients in most dog foods.  On the advice of my vet, I switched to a single-source carb food with no chicken.  My dogs are currently on Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Fish.  Venison and potato often works well for dogs with stomach issues too.  Good luck, hope the puppy feels better!
I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

  • My dog doesn't really have a sensitive stomach, but he has been a very picky eater since we brought him home!!  We recently just switched him to Innova Evo.  It was really highly rated and has high protein and no grains.  You need to carefully read the package so you don't overfeed, as you will probably need to feed less of this food than other brands.  My dog loves it so far!
  • My parents have a weimereiner that has had bloat 3 or 4 times and can only eat : chicken and barley made at home.  Some times she gets a can of wet dog food.

Sorry your pup feels bad.  GL!

  • I've heard that you can give a puppy a cup of white rice (not hot). Apparently this soothes their bellies and absorbs some of the acids that make them sick... good luck !
  • I agree with the other posters, do something bland (boiled chicken and rice...no seasonings) if that doesnt work do a venison (a lot of dog foods have special diets). Is this a chronic thing or has it just started? If it's an acute problem, use maalox and kaopectate (a couple of tablespoons per10 pounds). Most vets do allergy testings..it can get expensive but it really is worth it. Make sure he stays hydrated..pedia lite works well because of the electrolytes...have you noticed any diarrhea?

    GL with your pup!

She is a diva I swear. When we got her from the pound they had her on Pedigree and she wasn't eating. We have switched her food a half dozen times and finally found something that she would eat. Now she is having issues.

Normally I would let it ride out to see what happens put she is a Doberman and is skinny enough as it is. Makes me nervous. Thanks for all the suggestions!

She always has had this problem. I wouldn't call it "chronic" though. She would eat too fast and throw up or get that lovely yellow bile thing going on but it was happening once a month maybe. Now the past couple days she is vomiting 3-4 times a day. No diarrhea which is good.

  • My dachshund has a sensitive tummy and the vet told me to feed her cooked ground beef and white rice.  We now feed her Eukanuba small dog and that seems to be fine for her.

Does your bulldog also have allergies to pollen (and pretty much anything floating around in the air)? Our is super sensitive... we have to keep Benadryl on hand at all times, and even bring him in for steroids shots every so often. There have been a few times when his whole face has swollen up.

Just wondering if it is a bulldog thing...

  • Our pitties have really sensitive systems so we have them on a raw diet. Raw meat/veggies based on a predictor diet. Their skin and coats look great and no vomiting.

No judgment but just an FYI.... all the switching of dog foods may play a role in the upset stomach.  Also you should go a min. of 12 hours without any food and no vomiting before you try to feed her anything else just to be sure she'll keep it down.  And to help with the picky eater thing.... try feeding only at certain times... for a half hour at a time.  Pick the dog food bowl up even if she does not eat.  Dogs will not starve themselves! She will learn to eat on a schedule an this will not only help the digestion but also the "picky" eater thing.

Sorry if I'm butting in.... my FIL is a dog trainer... it's all we hear about...

  • yeah a lot of bulldogs suffer from air born allergies, due to the structure of their faces (kind of smashed in noses)...pekignese (sorry for the spelling) and the like have similar problems as well...benadryl and depo medrol do wonders (benadryl is safer for their kidneys though).

Our dog also had the eat to fast = throw up problem.  They make bowls to counter act this now with pegs to eat around.

The "brake fast" dog bowl worked really well and completely stopped the problem for her.  You can find them at almost any dog retail store.  Also if you want you can also put dry food in different toys making her use her brain and get tired while also slowing eating.... all sorts of treat holders work for that. Or you can put a ball in the food bowl she will have to nose around to get to the food.  Some dogs that doesn't work for because they will just take it out.  The bile throw up can also be a sign that she is too hungry and hasn't eaten.  Not a huge thing to worry about yet... get her on a feeding schedule and that will start to go away.

Definetly the fast eating will cause that to happen. Have you taken her to the vet recently? I had one doberman, years ago, come through the clinic (not to scare you), but had a hard time holding food down. The vet I worked for at the time told me it is common with the breed. She had told the owner to feed just a little bit at a time to prevent him from "bolting" at his food.

Oh yes!!! Bullys are prone to... well.... everything...

She gets seasonal allergies like a human... lots of sneezing and watery eyes... when it gets back she needs benadryl.  She has not yet gotten to the point of steriod shots but I'm sure we'll get there some day.

She has all sorts of issues.... she is allergic to rice... and possibly corn... When she has contact with something she is allergic to she breaks out in hives ALL over her tummy and even in her groin so we have to wash her 3 times a week in the summer and 2 times a week in the winter with a special shampoo to help.

She is also more prone to just picking up whatever is going around... is yours too?  In one week she got a tooth infection, ear infection, bronchitius and mange.... I felt so bad for her :(

All the switching was when we first got her. The only reason why we kept switching was because she wasn't eating. We were trying to find something that she would eat. She has been on Wellness for three years now. It is just recently that she has been vomiting more.

We have been spacing her meals out. If she vomited after her breakfast, I would make her wait till late night to feed her again. I am not so much worried about her eating now. She has food always out for her and will nibble throughout the day. I am just looking to see if that maybe a sensitive stomach food would help the vomiting.

As a veterinarian, it bugs me that you are giving advice about pharmaceutical treatment for someone's pet over the internet.  Do you even know the signalment?  (if you aren't a vet, you may not even know what signalment means)  How old is the dog, what breed, is there any history of other diseases such as elevated renal or hepatic enzymes.  These things are important to know before giving advice about medications which could have very serious consequences if given improperly or under the wrong circumstances.

To the OP, my advice would be to speak to your veterinarian about recommendations on food or medications to give for a sensitive stomach.  He or she will have better insight as to the possible cause of sensitivity in your little one.  Also, as PPs have said, boiled chicken and rice are a good tempoarary diet for dogs that get occasional GI upset, but it is important to understand why your pupster is having problems so that you aren't missing something serious.  Good luck to you :)

okay, i am sorry, I am not a vet, but worked as a tech for a clinic of 5 vets for 6 years. I was only trying to help, that's what the vets I worked for tell their clients to do.

He has never had an ear or tooth infection ::knock on wood:: but it seems that anytime we put him in Doggie Day Camp he comes home with something (even though we keep him up to date on the kennel cough shot).

He likes to play rough with the other dogs, so if he gets a scrap or a bite he is prone to hot spots too. Poor little guy.

  • Go here.  Any 5-star or 6-star food is great.

Ours has a sensitive stomach and is having this problem (along with skin allergies) right now, too.  We're currently switching her from Wellness Super5mix to California Naturals Chicken & Rice because it has some of the fewest ingredients of any dog food.

Big box brands like Eukanuba, Purina, Iams, Science Diet, etc. are terrible for dogs.  Check them out on that site...  they're all 1-star foods and full of ingredients dogs should never have to eat.

Also, whatever you decide to give her next, make sure to transition her to it slowly by mixing in a little of the new food with her old food so that her body can adjust to it.

Sorry to butt in, but since you are a Vet do you have any advise on what to use as an Antiseptic for scraps or bites that my dog gets when playing?

He is prone to hot spots, so I am always worried when he gets a cut that it will spread. Can we use regular antiseptic on dogs? Is there an over the counter option that we can use?

Butting in - our vet told us it's okay to use Neosporin on our dog.  She constantly has scratches from her allergies and they often turn into open wounds, so we just dab a little bit on.  If it's somewhere that they can reach and/or lick, though, you may want to cover it up with something like a sock or gauze bandage until it heals a bit.
