Swedish Covenant or other Northside dr recs?

I need to find a new OB/GYN (just freaked out/vented on the 1st tri board about my non-appointment today) and saw there was a thread below about Women's Group of NW and NW Specialists for Women...contacted one but b/c I'm nearly 10 weeks they have to check w/their office manager for approval first and won't get back to me until next week.

So...I'm called Swedish Covenant b/c they're nearby and they can get me in to see Dr. Wos on 4/20. There are some positive reviews online but I wonder if anyone else here has any reviews or other recs that you can offer? I don't want to have to go doctor-searching again if I can help it!

He's growing up, but he'll always be my baby!

I used to see Dr. Brennan and really liked her.  I switched to Women's Group of Northwestern though because it was more convenient for me to get to appointments from work and I wanted to deliver at Prentice.

  • I'm seeing Dr Venkatachalam ("Dr V") at NW Specialists for Women over on Kingsbury.  Love her.

I think I tried getting an appt back in the day with that other Women's Group but the dr. that was recommended to me was leaving to move to another city, yada yada.  I do recall that no one really would see me before the 8 week mark.  So try not to worry too much, you aren't far behind.

  • I see Dr. McDermott at Swedish Covenant (partially because it's nearby, partially because of my insurance...). I haven't met the other docs yet, but he seems okay so far (plus 25 years of experience doesn't hurt either...).

Sidenote: I read the info about all the doctors in the waiting room one day... almost all of them have served as chief resident at some point (most of them at St. Joseph's).

  • Thanks all, I feel reassured! Panic has gone away for now Smile My mom has been calling me multiple times a day with "recommendations" from her friends (she's 60, mind you) because Swedish Covenant is not a level-whatever hospital or doesn't have a top-rated NICU unit according to Important Report. blah. I know she wants to be helpful but OMG.

Obviously I wouldn't trust my or my baby's health w/a subpar hospital but it seems like that's not the case here... may still call a few other places tomorrow just to see if I can get in sometime this week but I feel better just knowing I have an appt and the ladies here w/docs there seem to like them. If the appt goes well I'm going to see if they'll give me a tour of the birthing rooms etc too.

He's growing up, but he'll always be my baby!

  • I'm not delivering at Swedish, but I kind of wish I were!  They have a lot of programs available for moms to be (free), and they seem to be very progressive in their maternity services.  I don't know anything about the NICU but lets face it there are so many options for transfer if your child needs specialized care in Chicago, for that reason I don't think I would make that the top of my reasoning.  I have never heard bad things about Swedish and I had to go to the ER there for a possible miscarriage and they were really great.

  • I delivered my twins at Swedish Covenant.

I saw Dr. Brennan and LOVED her!! I also saw Dr. Wos once on rotation. I pretty much liked all the Dr.s there. Dr. Brennan's nurse Megan is nice too.

Re: the NICU. This was a HUGE concern of mine, as I was delivering twins and the likelihood of them coming early was a big possibility. My insurance didn't cover Northwestern anymore (like it did w/ my DS). I was very, very concerned about it.

At any rate, as w/ most multiple pregnancies, i was also seeing a MFM for U/S's. I talked w/ him about it to get his honest opinion (since he is not officially affiliated w/ SCH but is w/ Illinois Masonic). He said that Swedish's nursery he considers very good. It's not technically Level III, but he said to consider it Level II+ and that the neonatal team there is very strong. That helped calm my fears down.

Dr. Brennan related to me that the nursery there was set to handle almost anything. They had a 30 weeker in there doing great. If, for some reason, they felt they could not handle the delivery or the babies once born, they would do a transfer to either Children's or to Northwestern. That also made me feel better.

So, I have NO issues recommending the hospital or Dr. Brennan! Also, a little perk at Swedish--while you're in your post partum recovery room, you get a FREE massage from onsite therapists. Nice.

I had a great experience at Northwestern when I delivered my DS, and the facility there is newer and nice. But I think I got a more personal experience at SCH and felt just as taken care of (even if the rooms are smaller).

  • Oh, and FWIW--my twins came at 36w4d and needed no NICU time, so it was a non-issue. But they had the nursery staff right there when I delivered, just in case, and did run some extra tests on them, since they were not quite full term (blood sugar draws the first 24 hours, car seat tollerance testing, things like that). They roomed in with me.

  • If a good NICU is what your concerned about I would recommend Northshore Univ.

That's the main reason why I went there ..... luckily they did not need it!!!
