Can someone give me a clicky link that talks about this? I'm in the car and people are trying to tell me that water is okay to give DD. My searching abilities are limited. Help a sista out.
How do you know if your baby is suffering from infant water intoxication? If your baby exhibits any of the following symptoms, it is important to contact your pediatrician immediately:
Swollen face
Body temp below 97 degrees
Unusual irritability
Unusual drowsiness
As was mentioned above, too much water in the baby's diet will cause an electrolyte imbalance because the excess water dilutes sodium in the baby's system and actually causes it to be flushed. This imbalance can lead to altered brain activity and may even result in the baby experiencing a seizure. In serious cases, water intoxication in infants may even lead to a coma.
I gave my son water his first summer here ( he was 6-9 months during the summer months. I was told only 1 oz a day...which is all he could do anyways! We were teaching him to drink from his sippy at the same time. But yes I've heard water is not recommended for babies. But once he hit 6 months we gave him small amounts, and he was fine:)
It's perfectly fine to give infants water in small amounts. For example, many doctors will recommend giving water (an oz at a time) if LO is constipated because it helps soften the stool.
In hot environments, you can give babies water to supplement their normal formula intake to prevent overfeeding. You just can't give it to them in place of food, and you shouldn't be giving them more than an ounce or two a day.

DS started drinking water when he was 6 months old but his pedi said it was perfectly fine and like others have said, no more than an ounce a day.
I'm pretty sure that it's not a good idea to give a 3 month old any water no matter how small the amount.
